Rising from humble surroundings on Manhattan's lower East Side where he was born, Alfred Emmanuel Smith, who died yesterday, become one of the most popular and colorful figures in American pub-; lie life of his time. He was elected governor of New York four times, the first man to achieve that distinction, and in 1928 he was the Democratic party's candidate for President of the United States. With, a personality that appealed to the masses, Smith, while he was in the New York state legislature and after he became governor, often was likened to Theodore Roosevelt because of the aggressive manner in which he fought his political foes. Another ; quality that helped him was his ability to answer all questions put to him and to coin epigrams which caught the public fancy. ' Even after his retirement from public life in 1928, when he turned the experiences of a lifetime of poli- tics to business, Smith was in the public eye. The j principal reason was his peculiar instinct of talking I the language of the people. To thousands, he was never anything but "Al."
