Friday, August 11, 1944 EDITORIAL LITTLE MEANS MUCH Those persons in Prince Rupert who individually attend to the smoking requirements of our soldiers overseas or do so as members of an organization such as the Women's Auxiliary, Coast Regiment, may rest assured their contribution is well received. Letters of thanks from our fighting men are more than fitting reward. For so little our men are so grateful. Because of this we should all redouble our efforts along in this regard. The following excerpt from a B.C. soldier's letter, in which he gives thanks for smokes, should be enough to loosen the purse strings of the most cautious contributor: "These days we all find a good smoke is a great relief (in spite of what the doctors say). But decent cigarettes are not to be bought in England at less than two shillings and six pence for 20, and here (France) they can't be bought at any price. We all depend, therefore, on the parcels and shipments which arrive from home." So you can realize just how much the troops look forward to the distribution of gifts sent from here. i Clothes make the man, they say. At the dry dock men admit that when women put on slacks they become man power. PLATFORM FOR CANADA " A platform for Canada is advocated by The Financial Post and is worthy of deep study. It is: 1 All manpower and resources, efficiently used, wherever need, to win the war. 2 Pay-awe-go policy, to the utmost possible limit, to avert inflation. 3 Elimination of wasteful spending by public bodies or private individuals. 4 Planning now for post-war, by government arid business, to ensure fullest employment and im prove social standards through individual initiative and competitive enterprise. 5 Orderly and economically sound disposal of surplus war stocks, plant, machinery, etc. 6 Planned and orderly demobilization of armed forces and war workers so they may be reinstated irt productive civilian life with minimum dislocation. 7 Generous treatment for incapacitated fighting men, to ensure their rehabilitation and reward their sacrifices. Wartime Prices and Trade Board warns that there is a connection frequently between the red face and the black market.
