The fifth and final game win be played in Hamilton, Ontario, on Monday night. Poor marksmanship by St. Catherines and top rate goa tending by Walt Lee of the Salmonbellies paved the way for the victory which tied the best-of-five series at two wins each, forcing the final game at Ham ilton tonight. Box 1291 THE DAILY NEWS HIGHWAY FROM PORTLAND (Continued from Page One) ran Public Works department surveyed the 70-odd miles between Ketchikan and Hyder, and its engineers estimated that a road could be put through for less than $5,000,000. Such a project would include a two-mile ferry across the Rehm Canal to Kevillagigado Island where Ketchikan is situated. Although the Hazelton-Stewart route has not been surveyed by engineers, a large part of it has been cruised by Art Cameron, a prospector of Stewart. In a re port turned in to the Stewart Chamber of Commerce in November, 1943, Mr. Comeron estimated that there were only two miles on the western half of the route that would offer heavy construction difficulties. This is part boulders, glacial drift and solid rock. The major part of the western half Is through light timber and fairly level country. There has been a road from Ste- art to American Creek for years, and during the depression its 14 miles -were extended slight ly using relief labor. Highest point along the route reaches an elevation of 2,000 feet, where it parallels an arm of the Cambrain Snowfleld Gla cier west of Meziadin Lake. Eastward the country falls awav to the Naas River valley, a po tential agricultural territory of promising possibilities. Once, in the booming days of rauroaa construction 30 years ago, preliminary surveys were made for a railway from the Portland Canal via Meziadin Lake, Groundhog coalfields and eastward to the Peace River block. Estimates on construc tion costs made at that time would seem a bit high by mod ern construction standards, but they were made in the days when earth was moved by man and. mule power, and' not by power shovels and bulldozers. It is possible that if death had not laid an untimely finger on railroad builder Donald Mann and his dreams, the railroad might have gone through. The dream is still alive at Stewart and Hyder, however. Alternative Routes The eastward portion of the route runs south along the Naas, turns eastward to cross a watershed to the headwaters of the Kispiox River which flows into the Skcena a few miles above Hazelton. It follows the Kispiox to join the Hazelton-Prlnce Rupert highway. Moderate conditions in mountain hiuhwav construction would prevail here, it is understood. De Mille, arrived at the Capitol Theatre today. DeMille's mightiest epic brings Frederic March Claudette Colbert, Elissa Landl and Charles Laughton to the screen In unforgettable roles. 1 The producer's achievement in supervising a cast of 7,500 to present the colorful spectacle of ancient Rome during 64 AX. Is something which remains unequalled in Hollywood production. 'The Sign of the Cross" is first and foremost a story of pagan Rome, reaching Us fullest expression in a Roman holiday at the Circus Maxlrhus, where the gladiatorial contests and all the brutal games that delighted Nero served as a prelude to the sacrifice of Christians to the lions. The dijima also includes a tender love story of a Christian girl and a Roman patrician, the roles being played with rare beauty by March and Miss Lan di. One of the high spots, too, is Miss Colbert's Poppaea, the wan ton wife of Emperor Nero, played by Charles Laughton. The queen of the court, sur-! rounded always by slaves and dancing girls, Claudette Is the picture of loveliness. With the world at her feet, however, her desire for March's love Is unsatisfied as the handsome hero finds true peace with Elissa as a believer in Christ's principles. gallum river to a point on the Skeena River highway west of Terrace has also been suggested. However, this would border the Naas river canyon, and would likely entail greater construction difficulties than the Hazelton route. People at Stewart have not allowed the Victoria government to remain Ignorant of their desire for a highway, and some day, given the impetus of a boom in mining, the Portland Canal centre may be the terminus of a fine highway.
