Box 274 Final Home Run Breaks 13 Inning Tie in Softball Ranger -9th Coast Game Winds up With Surprise Climax Rangers 1 9th Coast 0 Just as fans and players were about to relax the tension built up during what appeared would be 13 scoreless softball innings, Rangers snapped a surprise home run to take the first of the Ranger-9th Coast Canadian Army inter-unlt flnafs, at Acropolis Hill last night. It was Art Maynard, Rangers' pitcher, who popped the homer to centre field when there were two out In the second half of the thirteenth Inning. Maynard had already steeped himself In glory for his performance on the mound. The thing came as a surprise to everyone, including, presum ably, Maynard himself. The game was played in an hour and a half, which checked off at seven minutes to the Inning. O'utfield players spent as much time going, out and returning as they did In position. More than anything else, the game was a fast duel between pitchers. Rangers had the edge In that matter too, for Maynard struck out 19 batters, walking only one. Hertzman, 9th Coast's mounds-man, struck out six, and walked two. Rangers drove ten hits to 9th Coast's fieldmen, who did a tidy job of handling them. However, Rangers came close to scoring in the twelfth when Walkowskl made the circuit after being walked. He was tagged at the home plate, and the store remained zero for another inning. Infield and outfield work on both sides was practically flawless. Lineups: Rangers Brooks 3b, Jaskari S3, Armstrong 2b, Waxer If, Maynard p, Riley lb, Walkowaki c, Talosi cf, Gray rf.
