HUNTER. 1IANAOINO EDITOR DAILY EDITION Thursday. January 27. 1944 Swimming Pool or Skating Arena . . . It is to be hoped that difference of opinion as between a swimming pool or a skating arena will not be allowed to prevent at least some part of the civic centre undertaking being brought into being at an early date. Undue argument over choice of project might quite conceivably result in nothing at all being done. The suggestion has been made with or without justification, that the executive of the Prince Rupert Civic Centre Association may have presumed excessively on its authority in making decisions. In fairness to executive, however, it might not be out of place to observe that it has at least done something, that it is fairly representative of the community and of organizations and that it includes individuals who have worked hard in bringing the civic centre plan this far people who carried on when the going was a good deal harder than it today. This executive should be competent to assess the situation and determine on the best course of action. --Of-course, it should have an open ear and an open mind for all worthy suggestions and be able to decide what are acceptable and practicable and, having decided, act accordingly. If a choice is to be made at once between a swimming pool or skating arena, it will, of course be impossible to please everybody. When summer comes, no doubt the swimming pool advocates will be quite as insistent and audible as are some of the midwinter skating arena boosters just 'now. So what is the civic centre executive to do but use its own judgment and try at least to get something accomplished? A. MacKENZIE FURNITURE LTD. AEIT, iMFKOt'ffl OVALTINE I PUREX 1 of the policies of the Civic Centre Association. First of all. I would like to mind all interested parties thot tst are not advocating the build-ins of a a jnmifis imvh hn. rather a Civic Centre with i1 swimming pool in it. Included ' the building wtll be a large gymnasium, a large auditorium wttu full size stage, projection, booth, for moving pictures, cafeteria, numerous lounse and ciub ioorns In other wds. this building is designed to take in every phase of community acUvity ,and wiU make the widest possible appeai to young and old. Let me suggest o vi a list of cme of the recreations available: Badminton. Voaey ball. Amateur dramatics. Swimming and diving. wr polo. Club rooms for photography, stamp club, manual art, etc In making comparison, therefore, with a skating rink, let us look at both projects fairly: and cot pick out one unit of the centre while Ignoring the more an-Tortant part. In answer to the charge by our well wishers at the High School that we are taking an arbitrary attitude In deciding how to spend -Tiblic money without consoltint we who contributed the sixty thousand. I would say that la vm while they wrre still preschool age. a movement was Parted to build a gymnasium and swimming pool in this fjfy nd money subscribed for the purpose. Through the lnterven-'ir vears various methods of raising funds have been adopted and on every occasion the objective of gymnasium and swim ming pool was placed before h public. A few years ago.
