Pff THE DAILY NEW8 PROBLEMS OF PERSONNEL MANAGER Proper balance in employer-employee relationship at the Prince Rupert Dry Dock and Shipyard has been a vital factor in production of naval minesweepers and 10,000-ton carso ships, S. Wilson, dry dock personnel manager, said in an address to the Rotary Club at its weekly luncheon meeting Thursday. Speaking on the "Problems of a Personnel Manager." Mr. Wilson outlined the difficulties entailed In the sudden expansion of wartime production schedules. This involved hiring, training ;cnd "keeping satisfied hundreds of scmt-skillcd or unskilled wrk-m rmany of wliom wcrVprciud-tced against their 'jobs or the locality) and causing It to rruit in the construction of ?hin.s which were passed A-l by Lloyd's Registry, he toW his listeners. "The dry dock is a complex organization which can build or repair anything from a rowboat to a cargo vessel and, alttamrh we have many hundreds of men working With us, our relltns with them have been "happy." he said. "There have been no major labor troubles." Formerly principal or Borden Street School. Mr. WJtam outlined the Instruction he had received in personnel management H the University or B. C. before he Joined the dry dock staff In 1942. 'There were urgent human problems involved during the expansion of the dory dock, and we did our best to solve themlways keeping our eyes on the main goal of producing ships. Hundreds of men were coming, or being transferred here from the east. Some of them were leaving their homes" and ramilies arter being told there would be houses ready for them within a few days. Sometimes It was not always possible to provide houses immediately and dissatisfaction followed. Many of these people have made fine contributions to the commnnlty since that time." Difficulties which arose between workers and management had always been settled amicably after Informal discussions between Bernard Alien, yard .manager, and union representatives, Mr. Wilson declared. The- men were encouraged to submit progressive ideasand were rewarded if they were found practicable. Employment of women in the yard had posed problems which, although they seemed impressive at the beginning, had been largely overcome. Women who had joined the dry dock as trainees were now doing good work in various departments, the speaker said. He added that the rate of absenteeism among workers "at the local dry dock was consistently among the lowest in the province.
