It was a searing hot day and as is traditional In films, snow scenes j were being made, with the cast woollens and furs and the set piled high with synthetic snow. Peggy Ann came in, beads of perspiration on her pert little nose. She tugged at the heavy costume she wears as "Francle," stymied by the back buttons customary in that era. She quickly wriggled her active little body out of the horror and put a cool gingham Jumper dress. PegSy, whose father is Lieut. W. O. H. Garner of Camp Pino, New York, is a direct, natural sort of child, unspoiled by the adulation given glamor children. She's not pretty in the ordinary sense, but her sensitivity and quick Intelligence and the wist ful appeal In her round little I face, make Peggy Ann attractive beyond the ordinary. She loves pretty things. Her mother says her eyes filled with tears when she saw her wardrobe as the slum child, Franclt. She had had a similar one In every role, In "The Pied Piper," "Jane Eyre," and now "A Tree. She is looking forward to her next, "Nob Hill,' because she'll be an heiress, with curls and feminine finery. 5"ejv"' . . . Rotary Club BETTER FOOD ' HER SUBJECT Miss Mary Baldwin Is Luncheon Speaker After setting the tone for a talk on nutrition by polishing off a turkey dinner at their regular luncheon meeting Thursday, local Rotary Club members heard their guest speaker, Miss Mary Baldwin, tell of the work and aims of the nutrition branch of the Provincial Board oi Health for which she is travelling consultant. Miss Baldwin's brief talk was followed by the display of a Na tlonal Film Board talking picture 'Thought for Food." depicting the tremendous agricultural, distributive and scientific effort required to keep Cana dians supplied with foods which will maintain a high national health standard. The B.C. Board of Health became nutrition conscious after a series of Dominion-wide sur veys in 1939 which showed that only 40 percent of Canadians were eating proper food. This was largely a result of the depression, Miss Baldwin said. "Large numbers of men were turned down by the military ser- vices because they were not medically fit and poor eating habits over a number of years were responsible," she continued: In her nutrition work throughout the province Miss Baldwin finds that greatest progress can be made through regular educational channels. However, she suggested that service clubi might get' behind the drive by (seeing that merchants were not ?ft with health-giving foods on That seems to be the general picture throughout the country," she said. Miss Baldwin was Introduced by Dr. R. G. Knlpe, local medical health officer. During the meeting members approved a $10 donation to help i finance the newly organized President R. C. St. Clair.
