Crowd to Drill Hall The drill hall at Prince Rup- ert s naval base was thrown open last night to personnel of all services and their guests when H. M. C. S. Chatham's newly founded drama league known as "The Chatham Chatterers" offered their first production, an all-Navy revue which was received with enthusiasm by a crowded house. Esreclal credit for a vprv smooth and well directed show is due to the producer-manager, Captain's Writer Bill Mcrkley. who, before the war, was attach ed to the Department of External Affairs at Ottawa and was-also associated with the Little Theatre there. The orchestra recently formed from 11M.CS. Chatham Band gave an exceptionally fine performance under the baton of Bandsman Frank Dutton cf Toronto who himself composed the overture and theme. Dutton, a student of the Hambourg Con servatory, played reed sextette with Clifford Poole in the east and lias done the arranging for the Navy band here as well as conducting Chatham's dance orchestra. Chief singer with the orchestra and one of the outstanding beauties of the show was Miss Yvonne Rlffou of Prince Rupert, civilian writer in Captain's office at the base. Miss Rlffou's. charming voice rendered "It's Spring Again" and "White Christmas" followed by carols supported by a chorus of Wrens and sailors. Another musical highlight of the evening was a Dinah Shore torch song by Wren Rita Bradd of Windsor, Ontario, accompanied by the quartet including Bandsmen Frank Dutton, George Dutton, Lynn Jackson and Bill OTriscoll. Artie Shaw In Rupert All told the excellent numbers on the progiam were too numerous to cover but, before the curtain went down, the audience hissed the villian, Petty officer "Artie" Shaw of Windsor, Jormer orchestra leader, and applauded the hero, Surgeon-Lieutenant John Virtue of Toronto, in a thrilling melodrama entitled "She Was Only a Farmer's Daughter Rut" Both the above mentioned actors gave outstanding; performances. The farmer's daughter was delightfully played by Leading Wren Lee Sauve of Mattawa, Ont. These three leads were supported by a cast which included Sub-Lieut. Kunty Daivsoii, W.K.C. N.S. Leading Wren Marion Merryfield, Leading Wren Mary Francis, Wren Lucy Cox and Petty Officer Lawson Elliott. The beautiful gay nineties costumes worn in the play were loaned by Mrs. J. B. Gibson of Prince Rupert and able assist ance was given the producer by Mrs. Allen Nobelston, Toronto writer and Hart House Theatre player who Is at present Y.W.C, A. war services hostess here. The review will be presented again at the opening of.the new War Services Centre on January 15' I Lieut. Cdr. Roland F. Astbury. 1 executive officer at H.mcs. I Catham, opened the show with a few words of praise for the excellent job done by the whole cast. He also said farewell on behalf cf the officers of the base to Surgeon-Lieutenant John Virtue who left immediately following the show for a new appointment to H.M.CB.
