The concert proved that, while other cities may have larger choral organizations, there, is no reason why this city should not have ?. first-rate body of singers, considering the quality of talent available. On the basis of their six presentations last night the United Choristers could readily achieve that status. While, the Choristers who represent practically every choir and singing group in the city, dominated the prram, they did not fill it. Pleasing variety was provided by a piano solo, a violin ' solo, a vocal duet and solo, and of self-assurance, and, consequently, of smoothness, but during the latter part this dissolved until in one of the final anthems, the triumphant "Rejoice Today," enthusiasm and musical .raft blended into fine choral work. The blending of the Chorus' 30 I voices in Sir Arthur Sullivan's i "Lost Chord" was powerful and well received by the audience. Conducted by Peter Lien, the :in Jlns of the "Lost Chord" was accompanied by Mn. Carroll at the organ, and Mrs. E. J. Smith at the piano. Individual talent was present ed in a duet "O Divine Redeemer" by Dr. and Mrs. R. O. Large and later a barifene solo by Dr. I arge who sang Schubert's "Ave Maria." Instrumental present atlons were by David Zeff, of the VJS. Army, who rendered a violin olo, and two numbers by a trio composed of Mr. Zeff, violinist, Mr. Berneking, 'cellist, and Mr. Slaughter, pianist. The trio played Schubert's I "Trio in E-Flat Mai or." and To selli's "Serenade." Direction of the Choristers was under John S. Wilson, United Church cCiolr leader, during the first three numbers, and under Peter Lien, choirmaster of St. Andrew's Cathedral, for the three final presentations. Rev. J. A. Donnell directed the program, beginning with a brief prayer. Organist was Mrs. Carroll and Mrs. E. J. Smith was pianist for ! the choristers. Following was the program. He has recently been stationed at Dawson Creek, after a long tour of duty In New Brunswick and he flew down from Dawson Creek to Prince George in about an hour and then caught a ride to 1 Smithers by car, arriving home only a few hours after leaving Dawson Creek. Smithers winter weather has been of a type to suit the most enthusiastic booster of Smithers' climate so far this winter. Ten degrees above zero for the pas two nights, has been the coldest so far, and with Just enough snow to cover t)he ground nicely and some fine sunny days thrown In for good measure, the weather has been very enjoy- I able to all. No start has yet been made toward making ice In the curling and skating rinks but, with the nights getting gradually colder, a start toward the win ter sport3 should be made very soon. Christmas business at the local stores seems to toe getting a pretty slow start this year. With very little in the way of Christmas stock available to choose from and the Christmas spirit apparently subdued from over shadowing international condi tions there does not seem to be much enthusiasm over the prospect of Christmas which is now drawing nigh.
