Harold Macdonald QUIET DAY IN FRANCE Jerries On Run-Safety In Nazi Dug-Out Harold Macdonald, with the Royal Canadian Artillery in France, writes: "I am enjoying a nice quiet Sunday as Jerry Is so far away from us that he Is beyond range our guns and all is peaceful a change. "We've covered a lot of ground the past week but the enemy must have covered more as we've had a hard time catching up with him while he retreated. "After the terrible defeat he's suffered In the past month or so seems unlikely to me that the war can possibly last much longer and I shouldn't be at all surprised to see it finished with by the middle of October. "Last night I slept in a Jerry dug-out which they had hurriedly abandoned and I've not felt so completely safe since I've been in France. It was at least fifteen feet deep and had a roof on It nearly four feet thick. There was even an electric light system set up Inside but we didn't experiment with It for fear of booby traps. "Got some cigarettes from the Bank this morning and they couldn t have arrived at a more opportune time as I was com pletely out of Canadian smbkes. Most of the French people In the towns that we pass through get no cigarettes at all so we usually give them what we can spare. In England the saying among the youngsters whenever they saw Canadians was "Any Gum, Chum?" but over here It is "Cig arettes pour Papa." Even kiddles six and seven years old smoke but their parents don't seem to object. CAMfeRAI TAG DAY NETS $281 Cambral Chapter, I.O.D.E., raised the sum of $281 In theli tag day Saturday afternoon.
