Dated at Prince Rupert. B.C.. this 7th day of September, A.D. 1944 NORMAN A. WATT Official Administrator Prince Rupert, B.C. from what was formerly a huge two - storey, II - shaped service building, is now the social headquarters for Allied soldiers in the area. Its conversion shows imaginative planning which Impressed all who lounged through its rooms on the opening night. Contained In It are a gamt room, with pool table, miniature bowling alley and table tennis court, a lounge room, music rooms, restaurant, library, card room, photography room, a State room, with signed messages from the governors of all states, and a ball room. It was Frank Flnnerty, local U.S.O. director, who made the sweeping comparison when he Introduced Col, T. J. Weed, U.S. Army port commander, who declared the club officially open. Dancing In the second floor ballroom stopped to permit the ceremony. Col. Weed told how since April, 1942, when Allied operations began In Prince Rupert, efforts to get a club for enlisted men had failed, primarily because of a shortage of materials. He paid tribute to First United Church congregation for allowing the use of the church basement as a club room since that time. "The record of service of the club while it was there was not small," he told his listeners. "During that time It served 268,- 440 people, 24 per cent of whom ' were Canadian servicemen. He thanked U.S.O. members Frank Flnnerty, Eva La Pierre and Pete Wambach, and local ladles who had helped generously with the work. Col. Weed said that the new club was obtained through team work among various agencies, but gave particular credit to en listed men who worked on It voluntarily when fund3 ran low. '.'They willingly worked long hours to get the Job completed with no expectation of getting "overtime" for It," he said. Unexpected surprises await the visitor who penetrates the cor rldors on the floor, for Instance, one Is drawn by a concord of lively sounds to the "Jlve room" equipped with a record player, hot disks, and rugs which ask no other fate than to be cut. This actually Is an added fac ility for those who cannot get enough swing in the ball room above, where the Acropolis orchestra holds forth. Hunger arising from such ex ertions may be appeased in the restaurant down the left hand corridor. Upstairs on the right is a study room, the State room and administration offices, and on the left, a photographic room, a room for serious music, and a well stocked library. flanking the entrance foyer at the front is the lounge room with fire place, and a game room. Circulating among the crowd, Mr. Flnnerty and Mr. Wambach extended friendliness which made all who entered feel at home.
