With I-ocal Talent, Goes Over They were well rehearsed and Strong their number was very effective (By DOROTHY OARBUTT) and gra".,"I" C?f.r; ' I us were Pat Love. Marie Boulter. I liked Sunday night's show at olive Hukuluk, Eleanor Barber, the Capitol Theatre. I liked TcdEvelyn BUSsey. Isobcl Gay. Mar-Anderson who acted as master jorje goy, joy and Gladys Foster of ceremonies and who was res ponsible for the arrangement, writing and production of the show. I liked the costumes Ed Bernas designed for the chorus. I liked the Acropolis Post band and I liked the International flavor given to the whole show by having the chorus made up oi Canadian girls while all the men in the show were American. I think it was one of the best of the local talent shows we've had here and certainly as good. If not better, than a number of outside shows tha,t have come our way. A word about Ted Anderson who produced the show he has theatre blood in his veins from 'way back, his grandmother was In show business, his aunts and uncles also, and his parents right now have their own act in vaudeville. Ted knows what is what, how to get the right effect and he's delightfully modest about it all. I guess they don't go around giving fellows stripes for good work in morale building but. If not. It's a pity. The AcropoHs Post Band supplied the opening numbers and had "spots" throughout the show, the best of which was the diverting "Mama Don't Want No Music." a song which cleverly manages to Introduce each player and his Instrument In a few solo bars. The band also accom panied all the songs, dances and choruses and worked hard and Tony Wallack, pianist of and Betty Payne. With the chorus as background pretty Polly Carmack sang "Besamc Mueho." Betty has a neat way of putting over a song and her voice was pleasant in the modern manner. Following this, to the strains of wlerd. Jungle har monies. Anne Bruketta performed an African ritual dance call ed 'Tabu." It seemed to have something to do with charmed clrcls, casting of spells and breaking of tabus but, in the end, virtue was triumphant or whatever the African equivalent to that might be and the little lady carried off the mystic wooden trenchard aloft in victory. As a contrast the band then swung into a very old favorite "Ja-da, Ja-da" but translated the verses into their own particular vernacular, which was amusing. Burlesquing Frank Sinatra, Allan Richard, accompanied by the chorus, grouped gracefully aiound him and all wearing charming pastel floor length gowns, sang "It's a Lovely Way to Spend an Evening." The boys in the audience were fit to be tied when Allan, between verses. walked from girl to girl. lightly caressing her, planting a graceful kiss on her cheek, her brow, her hand. HowU of "Wolf" nearly drowned the singers. It was good fun. Just to add variety to the show a taps specialty number was called 'Titter Patter Pan ther" with Pat Love, in a cute little white satin Dutch outfit, I and Joe Ollverlo. How those two can dance together. It was a real thrill to watch them. They had speed, rhythm and finesse. Another band item and then Polly and chorus in Poinclana. This was a sarong number and, by the wjtv our little Rupert girls crept shyly out on the stage, you could Just Uu they had had tneir sarongs in mothballs since two years come Michaelmas. This di verting modesty added to their charm. Isabel aay followedc and at a moment's notice, good trouplng Isobel) In a gracefully swaying Huta dance. Then Polly in another song and after that Sergeant Warren Sweeney singing "Stardust." His voice comes over the mike very warm and true and listening to him Is a real pleasure. By the way did any of you spot the "gag" number in the show? It was very cleverly put over and in case any oi you sec the show I'm not going to spoil it for you. The only thin? U I cant tell you "who dun-nlf but. how did you like the coat Walter Roof wore? Now don't 4iay I told you! As a finale to this outstanding show Ted very smartly con ceived the idea of bringing each of the numbers back on In Just one verse of their act, or a fragment of their dance or song, Then when all the caste wcr on the stajc. Pat and Marie came out In a rousing nautical taps, took their place In the line and the Union Jack and Stars and Stripes were carried on by a W-A-A-K and an American Sergeant and a very effective tableau was formed as a fitting climax to this soldier produced show. Well done Ted and every one.
