Sport Chat The popular indoor pastime of the writing fraternity at the mo- i mcnt is picking a successor to Judge Landls. Everyone has been suggested from the President or the United States to Bob Coleman's dog. And, as a matter of fact, If It is law and order baseball wants we can think of no one more capable of maintaining it than Coleman's pup. However, it probably would lack a majority vote. There is one very noticeable angle to this search for a new baseball commissioner. There Is a tendency to lean toward a big name not now connected with?, t he sport, such as Jim Farley, or the various military leaders. At this hour it remains a mystery why the game feels it needs to search beyond its walls. When Judge Landis was ap- I pointed about 25 years ago, there was a sound reason for seeking an outsider. The Black Sox had sold out to the gamblers and the game needed a man who would revive tho faith of the customers and give them assurance that nothing of the sort would happen again'. Landls, the white-haired jurist and a familiar figure about the Chicago parks, was to supply that assurance. But today, the character of baseball never was in finer shape, There is no particular need for a magnetic personality to sell the ; game to the nation. Its honesty has long since been re-estab lished. The fan Is quick to forget and forgive. What the majors want now Is a sound bascball man, rich In background, who thoroughly understands the needs of the magnate and the players, who has had his fingers on the game's pulse for a number of years. A man like Bob Qulnn or Clark Griffith or Ed Barrow or William Harridge,. Perhaps men like Qulnn, Griffith or Barrow would . . . . L 1 111 ! Just the same, officials we have sounded out are Inclined to favor the one-man rule. "After all," said one, "you may have three men on a board, but In an argu ment, the decision will eventually be made by one man. If two disagree, the third has the thing tossed in his lap." But one official said: "It would take three men to replace Landls." Man "Smith got up from the table at the party Friday night when Carter told a dirty story." Wife "How noble of Smith.
