"Like all food essentials, the ones found consistently lacking are contained In easily obtained. appetizing food," she says' "Milk, milk products, fruits, cer- j eals and vegetables have most of them." The survey, carried out by the j use of score cards on which the I children recorded the .foods they ate at home and in school lunches, revealed a notable lack i of vitamins A, B-one. B-two. D and the minerals calcium and iron. Miss Young, who Is home economic teacher at Booth Memorial High School, believes that parental ignorance of the Importance of vitamins and minerals to growing children Is largely responsible for their exclusion from chlldrens' diets. "When the results of the survey were made public, many parents expressed surprise that their children were not being properly fed." she revealed. "Since then there has been l growing interest In what constitutes a balanced diet." Acting on Information obtain-' ed in the survey, the Nutrition Council will emphasize a campaign to educate parents and children In the need for bal anced nourishment. Miss Young, and Miss Colllson, also of the nutrition committee, have been asked by Inspector of Schools B. Thorstelnsson to work out a supplementary unit for the course of studies which will be Incorporated In the curriculum of the city's schools. The supplement will deal specifically with local nutrition needs as shown by the survey. Miss Young says that It Is her Intention to keep track of the supply of vltamin-iich foods, such as fruit and vegetables, available at local food markets, In order to publicize their availability, and to recommend substitutes when they are not In stock. The supply of. canned and powdered milk, which ncccssar- ily must supplement, or entirely Rupert, Is being Investigated. The survey revealed a consistent lack of milk in the, children's diets. Another feature of the campaign, Miss Young says, will b; the distribution of score cards, not only to school children, but to the general public as well, to be used as guides to good nutrition. They will 'be similar to those used for scoring the chlldrens' diets in the survey. NATIVE WOMAN J. P, BATHURST, Oi Mrs. .
