The return of the evacuees to London in spite of the buzz bombs and the government warnings, some of them to lose their lives in the latest robot attacks, is typical of British character. They would rather be in the thick of danger to be near their homes even though they be wrecks, than in the peace of the country living out. Britons, and the Londoners particularly, have been under fire for over four years now. They have amply shown their mettle and their courage during those days. Others may have stayed where the bombs dropped and the-cannons roared, because they had no choice in the matter. But the Londoners, many of them anyway, stayed not because they had to but because they chose. They heeded not the adage that discretion is the better part of valor. TEA AND COFFEE ... The mid-morning coffee drinker and the afternoon tea sippers will not have to. curtail themselves any longer. Providing they take their coffee black and strong and their tea clear and unsweetened, they may drink to their heart's content. We are making headway in the matter of lifting of wartime restrictions in this case because there is plenty of tea and coffee available and the shipping ' to bring it to us. . .yV . . As far as the tea and coffee is concerned, it was onljr the most inveterate drinkers who felt the rationing of tea and coffee even at its worst. For the most of us there was plenty and to spare. Prospects are that we will have to put up for a while longer with the rationiner of our sutrar and butter which, unlike tea and coffee, are real neces sities of life and available supplies of which we must share with those who are a good deal worse off than we are not only as long as the war Jasts'but probably ior a cime aiier. Also, he had not been warned by the lnvesUgator that Uie statement was intended for use as evidence, he told the court. r T He charged that he had made the statement under threat of prosecution for giving liquor to other C.N. employees on the night of February 25. Both Swift and C.N. Constable John McPhail, who had been present when the statement was taken, denied that Fales had been threatened. The accused was not under suspicion at that time, the special agent said. Crown Counsel T. W. Brown described the statement as not incriminating but as a "protestation of innocence." It was, he said, part of a routine Investigation conducted among employees who had been on duty when the money disappeared. Much of the material contained in the statement had already been presented to the court in the testimony of previous witnesses. After a ten-minute recess to decide the matter, Mr. Justice McFarlane ruled that he could tlnd no Indication that Improper procedure had been used to obtain the statement and that it might be included In evidence to the Jury. Earlier in the day testimony FOR SALE Telegraph employees, had been heard. All were questioned at considerable length by the accused and gave accounts of tho occurrances In the telegraph office on the night of February 25. Witnesses were Miss Elsie Gales, clerk, Edward J. Johnson and Wesley J. Hughes, wire operators, William J. Davles, former manager, MJw Donna Mc-Ewen, clerk, and Arthur L. Ford, wire chief. They agreed that it would have been difficult for Uie accused to reach Into the safe from his position at the operators' table and extricate manye from a locked wooden drawer Inside. Using a letter knife, which the Crown claims may have been employed to pry open the drawer while lt was in the safe, special agent Swift demonstrated to the Jurors' the ease with which the drawer could be opened.
