Thursday, June 29, 1941 Election Coming Up... The federal election campaign is all but joined with Prime Minister Mackenzie King's announcement that parliament will be dissolved before July 1, 1945, and the further statement that an election will be held either this year or next year. Of course, the remark of the premier to this effect involves no particular surprise since, at the utmost, the normal life of this parliament could not have been far beyond July 1, 1945, in any case. The statement of Mr. King may be taken by political observers as lending strength to the belief that an election may not be many months removed from now. As a diversion from the war, political talk will for a time now become a more absorbing topic than it has been. Possibly the earlier the election the better so that the air may be settled. It appears now that it may be a fight between the Liberal government, strong in experience of wartime administration but suffering from the political disadvantages that usually accrue from a long term of office under difficult conditions, and the rising Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, without record to either praise or condemn but offering blandishments' Jlliich, even if inconsistent, may prove attractive to a large number of voters. An unfqrtunate traffic accident occurred in! Prince Rurwirt yesterday resulting in the death of a 22-mojtth-old diiW- Without implying any comment on the circumstances of this particular incident, it might not be out of place to use the occasion to allude to present conditions on city streets due to heavy j traffic There are greater dangers here today than' ever before, dangers which make imperative the ex-' ' ercisinir of the utmost care and watchfulness hv nil who use the streets. Poasibly, we are fortunate, under the conditions existing, that there have not been more serious accidents. YjJfli ljggHggggggH CASUALAIRES... Daily News: A campaign has been started to induce the citizens cf this community to subscribe to the building of a Pioneers' Home immediately. By all means lt us eventually have a suitable building for old pioneers who have subscribed to the development of this city and who need our assistance but has any consideration been given to present day conditions? Have high building costs, lack of materials, labor shortage and In ezes ted maintenance costs ever been fully considered? Have the Dominion or provincial Governments been approached, even for advice or suggestions, regarding such a building? Most buildlnjs require a permit from the federal government when large expenditure If contemplated. Has such a permit been granted in this case or has soy complete estimate of costs been obtained from a reputable contractor? Recently the chairman of the civic health committee suggested that a suitable building for an isolation hospital might be obtained from the Department of National Defence after the war Why was a ssmUar suggestion otfered s;me r me agj regarding f1 i Save Food for Fighters'. THE DAILY NEWS .THURSDAY h. a pioneers' home not accepted? No civic money is available towards building an Isolation hospital, but apparenUy $5000 has been found and allocated towards a new pioneers' home. Which Is the most Important? Surely It would be good economy to explore the possibilities of spending a little money on the present premises to get by until after the war. Many buildings at present occupied by the armed forces will be available then and we feel could be obtained for a nominal sum. With a limited expenditure any one of these buildings will make a better pioneers home than that which is contemplated. Do our citizens know that a certain section of the Department of National Defence has not been consulted regarding the proposed site of this home'1 Advisedly they should. We believe there might be objection. unUl the war Is over In the Pacific. Certainly, if the time 1; opportune, let contributions towards the building of a home be obtained but contributors might well signify that their donations be utilized to purchase Victory Bonds thereby creating a trust fund for post-war work and post-war building. Thank you. Mr. Editor, for the ue cf your columns. A OROUP OF PIONEERS Advertise In The Dally News Ffirr n ACTIVITIES OF Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. (Ry Dorothy Garbutt) What a grand picnic the Service Wives' Club had. The Soo Suds furnished us transportation and a very nice driver. Howard Doertng. He didnt mind one bit being out for the day with 11 women and an equal number of children, and carried baskets and children and fetched wood and made fires. We went out to Prudhomme Lake where Mr. Roas. who live there, very kindly gave us firewood and took us out on the lake in his boats. The girls went in swimming and sun bathed. The children ate too much and fell In the mud and got dirty and ate hot dogs and drank I lemonade and. had an elegant, ' time. And believe it or not I wore slacks. I hear that a lot more of the , ' Home Defence boys are going acUve now and wearing Uie lit- j tie 'OS." badge on their arms. ' Oreat stuff, boys! And by the way perhaps that's one of the things "OA." stands for, too, as well as "Oeneral Service' and "Oood Soldier " I shall have to compile a list of all those "OS " phrases. Can you think of anv more? ! Tonight the Soo Suds are 'holding their regular Thursdav i dance and I hope junior haste t IS a way in which every HERE housewife may help to sp.sd the day when our boys come marching home. WATCH FOOD WASTEl Food it vital in winning this war and we on the home front mult conserve it to the limit. Especially during warm weather, great care must be taken to avoid waste of fresh foods. Limit y6ur purchases to daily needs. If you have vegetables and fruits in your home garden, be sure you do not pick too many at a time or leave surplus crops to tot. Share them with your neighbors. Serve smaller portions at all meals to there are no left overt. Watch fruit and vegetable peelings peel them thin. Save bonet for toupt. Save even breadcrumbs for ttuffingt.
