THE BATTLE FOR DUNKIRK The battle for sullen German garrisons along the coast of France. Dunkirk, Loricnt, St. Nazalre, still goes on relentlessly with Canadian and British guns pounding these pockets day and night Old Man Mud rules supreme however, and here are Canadian gunners piling ammunition along a narrow gauge track, along which carts are hand pushed at Dunkirk as the mud is too deep for trucks. (Canadian Army "Overseas Photo). JAP WAR PRISONER IN RURMA (Continued iTom Page One) was issued every six months. DesDite all Australian doctors could do, many died from malnutrition.- dvsentry. malaria,, ex haustion and, in some places, cholera. One Out of Five Died All the heavy railway construc tion work was done with crude tools involving a maximum of physical effort. As the' men. died, others had to work longer hours. Sometimes there were more, than 20 hours of continuous work. Conservative death estimates were one out of every five. Guards maltreated the prisoners by bashing them with heavy blows on the head sufficient to knock the prisoner over. Another punishment was to make the prisoner stand holding a heavy piece of wood above ms head for form two to five hours. Sometimes prisoners were made to stand at attention for several days. When the railway was com pleted in October, 1943, the pris oners were sent to Slam. It was from one party of those that the fittest were selected for transfer to Japan. Corp. Halfhide Was one of this croup which survived pri vations and disease in the Jungle, developing spiritual and physical powers to triumph over adversity and over their captors. After the prison ship was sunk the Japanese deliberately picked up all Japanese survivors and left Ihe prisoners to their fate. Theye were in the water four to six days and many did not survive. Into space usually allotted to 187 steerase nassencers were crammed 1,300 prisoners, 700 of them Australians. Port holes were sealed. The sick were allowed to go on deck but had to lie in the nitilcss sun without I shelter. I When the American torpedo struck, the Japs panicked. Some lumped overboard. Some got away in lifeboats. None showed an lntbrest in the nrisoners. Corp. Halfhide and 11 other prisoners scrambled aboard a raft on which they drifted four days and nights without food or water. When they were nicked up by an American submarine four of the 12 were dead. The sur vlvofs were taken to the Mari anas, then to the United States. returning to the United Kingdom on uie Queen Mary. Gail Russell and Diana Lynn play the parts of the authors who, in search of romance, hilariously complicate the lives of all per sons they meet. Lauahter is said to be the prin cipal item in the diverting com edy as the incidents of the girls' European trip falls naturally into the riot category. The girls turn Paris upside down and then leave for London. All in all it is a new kind of humor for the film fans. Bill Edwards and James Brown have the male romantic leads with Charles Ruggles and Dorothy Glsh well cast in the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Skinner. r r Q p Radio Dial V I I IX 1240 Kilocycles (Subject to change) TUESDAY P.M. 4:oo-Worcs Witn Music 4:15 G.
