JuC' too 4.00 ' Removal of Controls . . . Oho of the happy aftermaths of "V-E Day" is the gradual removal of restrictions imposed as measures of -wartime necessity. These were exceedingly strict and often irksome to the hitherto free people of the British Isles, but loyalty accepted as an inevitable consequence of the daily life or death struggle which they endured for more than five weary years. Now they rejoice in the removal of the deadly "blackout," the return of bright lights and with, gladness welcome the elimination of other restrictions involving movement or travel, censorship, employment and purchases. To us in Canada, controls imposed by the government were also accepted as essential and urgent. We believed them necessary and in general it can be said that we cheerfully accepted the imposition of many restrictions' to our freedom, as a vital share in the war effort. We believe YOU R HAT, SIR!! Let It Be A Stetson you want STYLE Matched with Comfort arid Serviceability the government acted wisely in instituting such controls and while we may not always have .agreed on the means by which they were maintained, many of them stand out in their effectiveness as a pattern to other countries. However,. with the feelings of relief we watch for the removal of these" regimented regulations arid the return of our former freedom. Already, there' are signs of this. No longer does a women require official permission to secure or change her qmployment. She may select her sphere of service, instead of being directed by officialdom. While men are not yet allowed such freedom, of action, we hope the day is not far off when equal freedom of choice will once more be the privilege of the individual. People have learned much from the experience of the last five years. For example, they know the merit and inconvenience of "cash and carry" as against an accumulation of unpaid bills, or the folly of fifty miles an hour when thirty is suffi-ciejit. ' W believe that in future many citizens will be found exercising a wise, personal control over wastage of effort, or materials, or idle extravagance. Such self-imposed discipline will prove of far greater worth to the country, than the coldly impersonal and therefore often unfair result of government control. T. Harvey. It was Indeed a surprise to me that there was no question' period, the meeting be-in j abruptly adj6urned by the singing of "God Save the Ktnj." The Progressive - Conservatives have held the only meeting in Prince. Rupert during the .election during which the audience has jvot Wad the opportunity t? ask questions. Because of -the super-pa'trlot-ism arid expressed cjrrifern for national unity advocated by bbUi Major Harvey and Mr. Ycunle in their speeches at the meeting I would like to have asked, had 'It been possible, the following questions: 1, How do you explain ac !l cording to th? Montreal Gazette, a Conservative newsDaDer. the staffmeiit of Pau'l E. Lafbaitaine, Conservative representative In Quebec, that his party will net ofcose five known pfo-fa:tcits Montreal Mayor Houde, leader of the Bloc Populalre, Llguorl La cmCe, Sasrevllle Hoy, Frederic Dwrion an J t'ri antl-conscrlp- lionlst Liberal P. How can national unity b? achieved between French and English: speaking Canadians by your party when Maurice Dup-lessls, former Qurbec premier of the Conservative party, campaigned fcr rion-coh'scflptfon lit that province, In contradiction to the conscription policy of Col. George Titevt, Conservative lea'd- er of Ontario? 4. Canadian1?, as you admit. were very much concerned about the Zombie riots, the snoie srrious cries taking place at Ter race and Chllllwack. How Ls it.uiuate then that General Pearkes, who Is no-nir the Progressive-cbnser- vative, candidate for Nanalmo, night. was officer commanding the Pacific Command air the 'tfme of the riots and yet no dlscfpliriary action was taken by him against the rioters? I happened to attend Major Harvey's meeting In S.nitfvjrs. I Eked Major Harvey the above questions 1, 2 and 3 which were not answered at that meeting.
