BESNER BLOCK, THIRD STREET (Downstairs) Today Crucial Game Canadiens-Hawks Tie Four-to-Four Score in National Hockey League CHICAGO ? The Chicago Black Hawks failed last night in their attempt to force a two-way first-place tie in the National Hockey League race. A victory in their clash with the Montreal Canadiens would have deadlocked them in front snn' with the Habitants, but the best the Windy City squad could da was to batter out a 4-4 tie. The Hawks tried hard. They came from behind twice and held a lead twice. But the Cana diens again displayed that certain something that has kent them at the top of the ladder thus far and squelched Chi cago's spirited attempt at vic tory. It was one of the fastest sanies every played on Chicago Ice. The Hawks started things rolling with a marker by rookie George Gee in the first period but Maurice Richard put tho Canadiens ahead, scoring two goals a little more than two minutes apart. The secod period saw Chicago out ahead again with goals scored by Don Grosso and Max Bentley. It was In the third period that the Canadiens turned on the power, scoring tw0 goals despite strong Chicago counter action. Murph Chamberlain and Toe Blake accounted for the Montreal goals and Clint Smith tied it up for Chicago. Bruins Win Over Rangers In Boston, meantime, the Bruins got out of a rut by nosing out the New York Rangers by a score of 8 to 7. Previous to this game, the' Bruins had b?en i held to three itralght deadlocks. Jus; as the Bruins appeared doomed to their fourth consecu-1 tivc tic. a string they last made during the- 1940-41 season, Bill Cowley whipped, a pass that was deflected by Terry Rcardcn's skates. The circling Herbie Cain wheeled for the loose puck and drove it home from six feet out. Two goals by Cowley and one by Dumart sent the Boston club ofr to a .-rood start in the first period. Watson scored for New York. In the second period. Bos. ton kept the lead on the goals I by Bauer, scoring twice, and i Egan. New. York gained ground on tallies by Goldup and La-prade. Goldup scoring twice. The Rangers led off the scoring In the third stanza with goals by Derriarco and Pike. Reardon came through with one for Boston. Goldup scored one for New York and Cain came back to win the game for the Brulas. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXtlXXX 111 It's an old wish and delightful to have the privilege to offer it . . .
