(D-26) LETTERBOX BEAUTIFUL PRINCE RUPERT Editor, Dally News -Thank goodness some of our Prince Rupert citizens have the nerve to stick up for their home town. Let us hope more will follow suit. I for one would like to add my voice to the rising protest against the sneers and criticisms so often heard. However, one should perhaps feel sorry for this evidence of an inability to adaDt oneself on the part of these cities. As one who has lived 21 years in Prince Rupert, I wish to say that I believe it to be one of the healthiest places I have lived in. No doubt we get a good deal of rain but practically no snow-no extreme cold, or extreme heat In summer. After two months In Ontario last winter and spring and a month in and around Winnipeg this fall, give me Prince Rupert at any timet I believe there is a great future possible for our city in particular and British Columbia in general. Prince Rupert could be a "garden city." We should be able to "rehabilitate" our parks, totem poles, museum encourage the development of gardens so that visitor will say: "What a lovely place" Prince Rupert Is!" Even our non-resident M.P.'s might be proud to say: "I come from Prince Rupert." This Is certainly the Pacific gateway to a marvellous interior. Let us make it a place to be proud of when we tell the tourists to come to B. C, the Coast and Prince Rupert. H. PONDER. A woman on a party line took down the receiver, but the line was busy. She heard another woman remark, "I just put some beans to cook, so I thought I'd call you up." Some time later, the first woman again tried to use the line. The other two women were still talking. Impatient to make her call, she broke in to say, "Madam, smell your beans burning." There was a scream; receivers slammed; the line was now open for business. P' TOPICS FROM PTARMIGANLAND Interesting Aviary to Be Found in Shawatlans Valley Where Noble Wild Birds V Abound On the higher slopes back of Woodworth Lake, many of the noble birds known as ptarmigan are to be found. Changing the color of itheir raiment to meet the seasons, scon, with the first fall of snow, they will be adopting a motif of white. In the valley between Wood-worth and Shawatlans Lakes, other wonders of bird life are to be found for here lives W. Reginald Coles, bird fancier and destroyer of game enemies. "Reg" helps to protect the water and pewer supply coming Into Prince Rupert and, when patrolling the large pipeline between the lakes, he often totes along his trusty .303 rifle. Actual photos show that many a wolf has rued the day he viewed this rifle from the wrong end. On entering the front room of this gentleman's house, one is greeted by some half-dozen parakeets (love-birds) or, to use their native Australian name, "Budgerigars." These are miniature parrots and eventually many of them talk. Therefore Mr. Coles has thoughtfully posted a request that only the most select language be used in the presence of these birds. Inside their very large cage, they have ample roof to fly around and In the centre he has constructed a miniature ferrls-wheel on which, to use his own words, "Some of these birds go around like BUly-be-damnedl" He also has several canaries and all this bird life affords much unique comfort up In the wilds of Shawatlans Valley.
