On one 36-foot troller'-halibutter EAST END GYMNASTS Enthusiastic Opening at Seal Cove School Last Night Last evening an enthusiastic group of youngsters of public school age turned out to take part in the Recreational Council's opening night at Seal Cove School. Twenty future gymnasts took part in an hour's program of mat tumbling, springboard tumbling and box vaulting. Spirits ran high and the gymnasium proved too small to carry out a wide variety of activities. However, it is hoped that a larger building may be obtained In which the recreational activities of the East End district may be co-ordinated. Until such time the Seal Cove School gym class will continue on Friday nights. William Noble, chairman of the Recreational Council, Pat Forman of the Bey S:outs and S. Moore, principal of the Conrad Street School, were on hand to .witness the opening. being built at a Cow Bay boat shop, plywood has replaced the usual fir flooring for the construction of the pilot house. Jn addition, the return of sheet copper to the trade has made it possible to ' lncvporate copper pans in place of sheet lead which was generally used during the war. Both of these changes have done considerable to reduce the weight of the pilot house on the small boat The walls of the pilot house are of three-ply marine plywood, while the top is of five-ply. Strength of these materials is claimed by the builder to be at least 10 times as great as the fir flooring which is customarily used. The weight re duction is very great, and it is claimed that new material will make a pilot house as strong and durable at less expense and labor. The copper window pans, which catch and drain away the water which strikes the pilot house windows in wet weather weigh only about 20 percent of an equal number of pans made out of sheet lead. Whereas 100 pounds of sheet lead Is required to install pans in a medium- sized pilot house, the Job can be done with about 18 pounds of copper. These topside weight reductions, fishermen say, will increase the stability of small boats. Closure of salmon trolling along the coast, exclusive of the Queen Charlotte Islands dis trlcts, became effective Friday night, concluding one of the best coho seasons in years. Thi means that the northern part of the mainland coast is closed to all types of salmon fishing. Areas One and Two, which re main open for trolling operations, however, are closed to all salmon net fishing. Recently, the coho catches have been fall ing off, fishermen report. Areas Seven, Eight and Nine which in clude Bella Bella, Bella Cdola, Smith's and Rivers Inlets are open for glllnettlng. The Canadian boat Domino II was in port today with 9,000 pounds of black cod which was disposed of to the Prince Ru pert Fishermen's Co-operative. LOOKING OVER BALL LEAGUES There was only one game1 In the American League yesterday but it was enough to put a virtual .finish to the Washington Senators' chances of beating the league-leading Detroit Tigers out of first place. The second place Senators went down to a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the New York Yankees, dropping them a game and a half behind the idle Detroit club. The Senators have only three more games to play, all with Philadelphia. Chicago still stands with a two game lead in the National League over the second place St. Louis Cards. Brooklyn and Philadelphia played the only games scheduled In the senior circuit yesterday and Brooklyn took them both, winning 1-0 and 11-5. Here are today's baseball games: American League-St. Louis at Detroit, Washington at Philadel phla, New York at Boston. National League Pittsburgh at Chicago, Cincinnati at St Louis, Boston at New York, Philadelphia at Brooklyn. GRAVESEND, Kent, Eng.
