Indications are that 1945 will be the construction industry's biggest year since 1930, notwithstanding shortages of material and labor. In the first six months of this year, permits issued by the city building inspector totalled $1,-578,184, more than double the 1944 figures of $695,306 for the corresponding period. New buildings begun or to be erected include 172 houses, two institutional, 18 commercial and 76 other structures, such as garages and toolsheds. Wartime Housing Limited, will erect 2C0 houses apart from the private dwellings. The labor shortage will curtail some of the construction planned, but . contractors expect an Improvement before long with experienced tradesmen returning after serving In the armed forces. Notwithstanding the number of permits being Issued, lumber companies are pessimistic about the actual building which will be undertaken in Regina this year. "There's a lot of building planned, but there just isn't enough material being made available to take care of half the demand," said one lumber company official. Another said he did not think more than 50 percent of the houses now being built would be finished this year because of the material shtrtage. "A person as soon as he obtains a permit can start bulldlne his house. Drovlded he can hire a contractor If he does not Dlan to do the work him self. But to get the house finished Is another matter entirely." Lumber companies say it is practically impossible to obtain wood shingles, doors, flooring and celling of all kinds, wood and other lath material. Metal of all kinds is In short supply. Asphalt shingles are easier to obtain, but even here the demand outstrips the supply. Wall boards and other finishing material is at a premium.
