The army's official cook book Includes recipes calculated to tempt fighting men's appetites and ease the qualms of their families who are sure they are not getting the right things to eat. In addition there are 27 for pastry and cakes, from chelse buns to short breads. Other sections of the book, however, give instructions for preparing bacon dishes, egg dishes, savories, soup, fish and liver dishes, .grills, meat pies, stews and mutton and pork dishes. Variety is stressed in the gen eral Instructions as the keynote for success in cooking, "and a bill of fare giving a w:ce election should be the aim of everyone responsible for maintaining a high standard of messing ln the army."
