Sport Chat The world ny weight champion finally won a fight but hardbitten ring followers such as the sports-writing gentry took the sad view that Joltln Jackie Pat- 1 erson had slipped from the heights. Jackie, recognized, as world king by both Britain and the United States, was seeking to regain a little of the prestige he lost in two unexpected and decisive defeats. He was matched against an unknown. Stoker Jack Grimes who got the cheers from a packed house in a London suburban theatre. Paterson got a close verdict after eight rounds. 1he fight itself was a humdinger. It featured toe-to-toe year old Paterson also hit the j canvas four times jecause His vicious wild swings missed their target. Newspaper tories of the fight emphasized, that this wasn't j me paterson 01 tne acvastauns punch who rode to the top by quick knockouts. His timing was bad, he didn't have the same zip. and the tough stoker Just would 1 not stay down. Indeed, the writers figured it waj a sad commentary that a world champion w-as matched with an unknown jwho, at best, had had mediocre 'success. I Paterson won the world title iback in 1913 when he took just CI seconds in his home tjvn of Glasgow to knock out Peter Kane, a former tltlcholdcr who rose again to top?flight position in a comeback. Success after success followed for Jackie until he met Danny Webb, Montreal .3gro member of the Canadian Army, in a London non-title bout last Ostoter. wi';), another "unknown" in Britain, gave the champ a pasting and forced him to retire after three rounds. Several weeks later Paterson met Petty Officer Ben Duffy, another featherweight, and a home-town crowd saw Jackie knocked out for the first time in his blazing career. The end came in the seventh round. Paterson previously had b?aten the sailor twice on points. The non - title fight with Grimes was at the feather limit of 12G pounds but this was more of a handicap to Grimes than to BOXERS WIN TEAM TITLE Captain and Craftsman Top Hill in Canadian Tournament Overseas SOMEWHERE IN SOU! March 5 (? -Russian speed skaters, both men and women, will make a strong bid this season to break national and world records. Speed skating, one of Russia's oldest and most popular winter sports, will be on almost as high a plane as in pre-war days with various city, district and trade union championships deciding entries for the U3S.R. titles. In addition, the Labor Reserves Sport Society wilWio'd its own titular meet for juvenile When Soviet power was established, speed kating already was well developed. Like all other games, it was recongnlzcd as a mass sport and before the war more than 115.C00 competed in official races, onc-quarlcr of theni women. In pre-revolutionary years Paterson. Jackie weighed 122 but .Russia had many outstanding Ice the stoker had to train hard to get down to weight. Paterson has been fighting feathers bscause he wants to add the British and Empire feather crowns held toy 39-ycar old Nel Tarleton to his collection. It's not really much of a weight handicap because Jackie has plenty of trouble getting down to the flyweight limit of 122 pounds. On the same n!?ht as the Pat- crson-Grimcs battle, Duffy drew with Syd Worgan, Welsh featherweight champion, in a 10-round bout at Birmingham. Grimes had previously beaten Worgan on points and, to add to the Confusion, Danny Woods, a six-foot shipworker and little known as a boxer, came to London a few I weeks ago and beat Duffy. A box- er who suffered a fractured Jaw ' midway through an eignt-rouna 1 welterweight bout concealed the injury and went or to win. He was Joe Orsatclll of the Fighting French Navy and he defeated the strong favorite, George Odwell, who retired after hitting the floor three times in the final round, C.N.R.
