The' decision of the federal government to abandon the Skeena Kiver highway, as revealed by Harry King, president of the Terrace and District Board of Trade at a recent meeting, is a blow that every community in central B.C. must prepare to resist. What justification the government offered for taking such an action, Mr. King apparently did not make known, and it is doubtful if any real justification can exist. To withdraw all maintenance equipment and staff from the road means virtual abandonment of a project which cost at least $0,000,000 to put through, and which is one of the hopes of this part of the country. To abandon this useful artery without thought for tfa territory which it was built to nourish cannot be permitted. Sizes 35 to 44 $20-00 10 $37.50 'THE MEN'S SHOP" We understand that the Terrace Board of Trade has urged the Boards of Trade -at Prince Rupert and Prince Gedrge to join in protest to the Minister of Mines and Resources and to our private member, Mr. Hanson. No doubt this will be done, but it is also the dutv of every other organization and individual to lodge a similar protes 10 Ottawa. The road which was built at such tremendous cost, and which mean so much to central and northern B.C. cannot be allowed to fal linto a neglected state. What the government's reason is for such an announcement when, we understand, the provincial government was trying to negotiate a deal to share equally in the maintenance and improvement of the road, is hard to understand. True, the military necessity which caused the road to be constructed has apparently diminished, but v doubt if even military men would say that it had ceased to exist. However, w'hen the government goes to the people in June, it will accent its suitability for post-war leadership. It will be hard for it to convince the people of north-central B.C. of that suitability if they see one of their greatest postwar assets consigned to neglect six months after it was created. BUSY SERGEANT RUNS SUPPLIES INTO HOCHWALD Stretcher Hearers Praised for Valor During Fight to Drive Germans From Hochwald Forest; Battle Sidelights By DOUGLAS AMARON j5 1 Cnnnrtlan Press War Correspondent WITH THE CANADIAN ARMY IN GERMANY, April 18 Q A busy man during the fighting for the Hochwald ; was CSM Bill Ives. Toronto, who had the difficult Job of keeping his company supplied with food and ammunition. Commanded by Maj. Ben Dun-1 kelman, Toronto, the company i fought for four days, through the dense spruce woods. The were dirt tracks, which were passable until tanks moved over them, but then became so torn and rutted that even jeeps and carriers became bogged down. "Ives had Just about no sleep at all during this time," the company commander said. "Ho wasn't always successful getting through but he was always trying. If he couldn't get up one road he would tak another until he found some way of reaching us." Another man Dunkelman praised will have to o nameless for the Ume being because he was wounded. He was a stretcher bearer from Winnipeg who despite a serious wound stayed for ward to care for casualties. The major eventually got him out of the fighting by sending- him back with some wounded but as toon as he delivered them he came back again. nolher stretcher bearer, Rfm. Frank Tascona, M.M., St. Bonl-, face, Man., picked up an Am-, erican dollar bill during the fighting. It apparently came i from the Germans who always : carry a strange assortment of money ranging from Russian ( rubles to Italian llres. During the move down to the i Hochwald, the Lake ' Superior j regiment bivouacked one night In the- field. First thing they; knew there were Germans1 around battalion headquarters ; ond one officer was shot! through the back. The Germans picked up five Canadians and raced off with them as prisoners. Four of the Canadians escaped quickly and a rescue party went out immediately, shot up the Germans who still weren't very far away and ; brought back the fifth Can-I adian. j Maj. Harry Parker. Toronto, ! battalion second - In - command. nmmm Marriage Guidance Subject of Course LONDON, April 18 Q -An experimental course In marriage guidance has been opened at Morley College here, first of Its kind to be undertaken at an educational4 institution In this country. Most of those attending the course are married but some are single social workers and persons thinking of getting married. "Great Interest has been shown in the course," Dr. Mace said. "People seem chiefly Interested In the whole outlook for the Institution of marriage, the education of children and how they can prepare themselves for it. i About two-thirds of the students are women. ksslntial I HIT - SCAItti: LONDON, O-r-A Corset Guild official said the Board of Trad'! hu.f "at la it realized how essential a good corset Is to a woman," but held out no hope for additional supplies Immediately because of material said the situation was tense for a while as you couldn't be sure who was friend and who wastry?. He was In a caravan and kept one hand on the lock, challenging every visitor before opening the door. Maj. Tommy Murray, Port Arthur. Ont, a company commander in. this unlt,: tola of another strange experience lu this area. He was with Oapt. Tommy Henderson, Winnipeg, when they spotted two heads over the edge of a trench. "We took It to be an outpost from one of our other companies but I was curious and went up to have a look," said Murray. "They let me get within 30 yards then shouted German and waved to me. I had a Sten and fired. They returned the fire. We got out of that and started sniping, killing one, wounding another and J-wo got away." Murray, Incidentally, said that one of the prisoners his company took said his formation was pulled back to Xanten then seni back to the Hochwald with orders to fight until death. "That's all right for the other fellows, but not for me." ald the German who came in and surrendered. PRIESTLY TAUGHT FILM STAR YORKSHIRE ACCENT Michael Redgrave does not know J. B. Priestley, yet Priestley taught him the Yorkshire accent which he assumes for his part In "Jeannle," the film version of the famous play which is playing at the Capitol Theatre today only. Redgrave has always been In the habit of listening to Priestley's Sunday evening broadcasts, and when he heard that he was to play the part of a Yorkshire man In "Jeannle," he paid special attention to Priest ley's vocal indiasyncrasles . . and picked up an authentic accent. Redgrave Is becoming a ipecialUt In dialects. In hli last picture, "Klpps." he spoke In a high-pitched Cockney. For-thLs fHm he. also had his hair dyed blonde and took off a stone of his weight. Much to his relief he Is back at his normal weight In Jeannle . . . which means to say that he Is back on mlld-and-bitter. He has also had his hair dyed back to its original color. Co-starring with Redgrave In "Jeannle" Is Barbara, daughter of the Irish poet, Pat Mullen. the "Man of Aran." "MY DAY" Ri:St!.Mi:i NEW YORK. April 18 0 Mrs. Franklin D.
