New Year's babies customarily get a big play, which is proper enough, but this year Prince Rupert will welcome a New Year boat. At least it will be almost a New Year boat for, although it will not be launched on New Year's Day, it will drop into the water on an extreme high tide shortly after. The boat is a 46-foot troller being ouiik u wjc a gers aboard the United States Bay boat shop for Frank Arm-1 . . , . . . , Toloa' whlch docked here whovessel sted. veteran coast troller took up residence in Prince Ru- Fridav to unload frozen fish, say pert this year after many years of fishing out of Namu. This fine boat and we really mean fine will replace Mr. Armsted's former boat, Red fern II, which he sold this fall In Vancouver. With a length of 46 feet, the new vessel has a beam of 11 feet six inches and a draft of six feet. She has a fir keel, two by three-inch oak ribs, fir beams and cedar planking. Her decking is of fir. Sleek and un-painted, except for a coating of pitch below the waterline, the new boat is standing on the ways while workmen caulk the deck. The new vessel will be powered with a 60 h.p. Caterpillar diesel engine and, with her sleek lines, ought to be one of the fastest boats in the local trolling fleet, as well as one of the largest. Mr. Wick, who is justifiably proud of the job he is completing, plans to build a new 37-foot troller for himself when the present job ' Is completed. Primarily a fisherman he spends his summers trolling, returning to his boat shop in the winter months. He designs the boats he constructs. From the good-natured griping of a number of the 150-odd American servicemen aboard it was gathered that they had been afloat so long that they had almost ceased to wonder if they ever would get ashore-permanently. The Toloa, they said, had embarked 150 servicemen and 200 civilian workers at Adak, far out on the Aleutian chain on November 30. By December 21 they had got as far as Prince Rupert. "Adak is sho' a lo-o-ns way from Bu'mln'ham," said one serviceman and, from his extended drawl and chocolate skin, it was evident that he did not mean Birmingham, England. He was a member of a colored combat Infantry regiment and had been Shteen months at Adak. Another sen-iceman from Ida ho had been a ground crew member of the Army Air Force of which there were several aboard. He had served as a wireless operator between aircraft and landing field and hoped eagerly to be at home for Christmas. "Most of the men have re-enlisted in the regulararmy and have been given Christmas leave. It looks as if some of the boys from the east won't make it home by Christmas." he said. A large part of the trip was made up of cargo stops at Dutch Harbor, Whittier, Juneau and Ketchikan. The Toloa was scheduled to sail from here at 6 o'clock last night and to arrive in Seattle sometime Monday.
