NATIONAL UNION OF MACHINISTS FITTERS & HELPERS, Local" No. 1 NON-PARTIZAN REPLY Editor, Daily News: As president of the Non-Par-tizan .Association, I would appreciate your permission to answer a letter printed over the signature of F. Elliott, who, I am certain, Is Ex-Alderman Tom Elliott. One paragraph of this letter contains an erroneous statement. He charges the Non-Partlzan Association In thes-e words: "There Is no need for me to .stress again the reason for my dlsqualiflation at this late date but I would lixe the electors to know that It Is the result of Non-Partizan manipulation. The City can 111 afford an election at this time and it is the Non-Partizan Group which caused JR L J- S13 i Sri bSSF PORTS DRESSES jummer Sports Dresses Spuns, juble spuns and cottons; one aid two-pieced styles. Upon enquiry of both the Mayor and City Clerk am assured that at no time did any member of the Non-Partizan Association as much or in a prl vate capacity lodge any com plaint against Alderman Elliott's seat on the City Council. The truth of the matter Is that El llott, when he was nomlnaed as alderman, swore that he had not assigned or hypothecated his title to the property on which he qualified. He only Is personally himself to blame for the whole mess and expense. ROBERT McKAY, President Non-Partizan Association. TIRED OLD COUNCIL Editor, Daily News: Are Vancouver and Esqulmalt the only cities bordering on the Pacjflc equipped for shjp repair work in the greatest war In the Pacific? Is it possible .hat the tired old men and women comprising the city council have lost their voices? It is Just too bad when we grow old that we cannot speak and let Ottawa know that we are stil here with a modern plant ready to serye. The wheel that does the squeaking Is the one that gets the grease. GEORGE B. CASEY. Jurist Examinee 1 British Divorces LONDON, July 19 Claude Mulllns, London magistrate, took a look one day at the divorce hearings facing him and went on record as saying "It Is too easy to get married." He suggested to ease the divorce prob lem a re -examination of marriage laws and a special court for unhappy couples where re conciliation could be attempted. Alexandria, Egypt, was named after Alexander the Great who founded It In 332 B,. C. EIGHTH AVENUE EAST Editor, Daily News: I read with Interest your edl torlal of Wednesday In regard to the Prince" Rupert Highway and the cancelled visit of Hon Herbert Anscomb, minister of Dublic works. Talking about seeing things at first hand, wonder if the Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Daggett or the city engineer have ever been out on Eighth Avenue across Hays Creek. I am going to ask them to walk out that way and see the road for themselves. It seems to me it would be far better to fix up that road now without waiting for somebody to be killed when the city would have to pay damages. Between the Ridley Home and Seal Cove there must be 150 holes, some large enough for a child to be drowned In. The plank roads were kept up better thirty years ago. I am even ashamed myself. F. Among the members of Prince Rupert's first city council was T. p. Pattullp, later premier, per ennial member of the provincial legislature for this city. Other council members were F. H. Mobley, A. A. Mclntyre, W. P. Lynch, A. R. Barrow, V. W- Smith, J. H. Hlldltch and G. R. Naden-. Official letters received that year from the federal and prov inclal governments all carried a border 'of black, a sombre de cpratlon that at first puzzled re searchers. The explanation was. of course, that 1910 was the year of the death of King Edward VII and the black bprdered station' ery was a sign of official mourn. ing. A survey made In October of that year revealed that P rince Rupert had a population of 4.771 and covered an arpa of 20,000 acres. The admirable foresight of the city planners, wht laid out a townsite for a future population of 50,000 has not made it necessary for the area cf the city to be Increased during the last 35 years even though the population has tripled. The plebiscite approved the purchase by a majority of 170 to 9. Dark doings were hinted that year when an alderman laid charges that the firm of coal dealers which supplied fuel for the city's electric light plant had short-weighted the city by some 80 tons of coal.- The alderman later revised his charge to merely state that the city had been mulcted of "a few tons" but the coal dealers, stung by the Inference, pressed an Investigation which had its finale In the city power house at 3:30 one morning. Allison, It seemed, had been unable to keep track of the quantity of coal used during his slumbers. Another minor scandal occurred when the sergeant of the city's five man police force was suspended by his chief on a charge of bribery. The sergeant, the ancient documents state, had accepted money In return for allowing the Illegal sale of liquor and other "nefarious" practices. There was no record of that case being concluded in 1910. PAGE FIVE Australian Bishop Good Clarinettist SYDNEY. Aust..
