LTD. MR. PERRY SPEAKS Continued from Page 1 can be arrived at." A major item of Interest to his department was the welfare and a advancement of rural schools and their teachers. Mr. Perry stated. Last year special grants of $344,000 'to assist rural schools, and $180,000 to raise teachers' salaries had raised to $1,000,000 the amount of money granted in recent years for such purposes. Average salary for rural school teachers was now $1318 a year and the minimum teachers salary set by law was $890. Issuance of a free school magazine was one method of assisting the work of teachers and helping to make the rural school a more effective agency in Uie life of the district. Distribution of hot lunches in school was encouraged, the department bearing 50 per cent of the cost. Four new schols have been built along the Alaska highway north of Fort St. John and it is expected that a vote for eight new schools which Is scheduled to be called for at the next session of the legislature will have to be expanded. These schools will be distributed throughout the province. Reading of carefully selected passages of Scripture In schools was authorized by the government and "over a period of time these .readfyurs will familiarize chlldreiAwUh the best passages of Holy'Writ.'f Coitfatlqn tf j rural schools has also been encouraged by the department which feels that consolidation of rural districts results In Improvement of educational facilities and a uniform rate of taxation in the districts involved. While 277 of the province's 661 school districts are managed by official trustees, the department would prefer to have the citizens elect their own trustees, the minister said. "Wc cnruuiagc elected trustees rather than official trustees because nc feci that indifference to local responsibility eventually results In a psychosis for guvrrnmenl control. Citizens uho indolently fail to exercise their responsibilities have taken the first step toward losing their rights." The Minister concluded with brief comment on the work of the provincial Rehabilitation commission, of which he Is chairman, and of the provincial archives, library and museum, which come under his department.
