JThe greatest victory news of the wac comes today with the simultaneous announcements by Churchill, Truman anuStalin in London, Washington and Mogcow that forces of the western Al-lies'and Soviet Russia had linked up in the heart of the German Reich, thus cutting the enemy in half. . The war in Europe is all but won. The Allied plan of utter defeat of the ejiemy is rapidly taking shape. Only scattered and ineffectual resistance is now to be anticipated in that theatre of war. : We have cause for great rejoicing today but we are rightly warned that the time is not yet for slackening in our efforts. In fact, the harder we fight and work now, the sooner will Oome the final peace qnd the end of dun long task. ; This is the greatest moment in the war, as yet, portending as it does at long last but in short time now the eulminating acts of final and complete victory. Son Francisco . . . ; With the goal and hope the formulating of a practical program leading to an enduring world peace but with the way to that achievement l)eset with difficulties and dangers to surmount which will require skilful negotiations and diplomacy and hiirh-minded and forbearing vision of ultimate aims and ideals, the great world security conference at San Francisco is now under way and the city of the Golden Gate is now the focal point of world attention. , As the war in Europe draws Speedily to its close, it is fitting and appropriate that San Francisco, principal port of embarkation for the still unfinished business of Pacific war, should he theejie of jthis 'momentous gathering which may spell vast accomplishment in the progress along the path to the better world which we envision after the recent darkness. This is the great meeting, couched in the flush of our certain victory, the Literally... 'THE MEN'S SHOP" object of which is to lay a firm groundwork which will nurture .the full fruits of that victory which has been fraught with such sacrifice and travail. Truly indeed history will he made in San Francisco in the coming days. Norway Becomes Last Ditch If Nazi fanatics continue to hold j out in Norway after the Allies have I overrun Germany, the Royal Air Force ( will play a major part m the process 01 starving them into submission. It is a job for which the R.A.F. is well suited and one at which it has already had considerable experience. Ever since the Germans first con quered Norway in 1940 the R.A.F. has kept up an almost non-stop patrol along its rugged coast,, spying out anil 'attacking shipping. Except for occasional visits by Bomber Command to special targets, such as the Tirpitz and. thu U-boat pens of Rergen and Trondheim, this work has been done almost exclusively by "Coastal Com-i mand Reaufighters and Mosquitosj firing rockets and torpedoes. i By last summer these air attacks on the enemy's vital shipping line had proved so successful that he was forced to operate at night only. Supplies and ammunition for the garrisons in way had to be run across the Skager-rak under cover of darkness. Moly-denum and other loot are shipped back to Germany in the same furtive way. So the R.A.F. developed n sys-' tern for attacking; the night convoys i with flares. In the last six months'; IlnlifflYPS ;mil nthm- Vimnhm-a fittrwll with special equipment have made 200 individual night attacks on enemy ships i irymg 10 run tne gauntlet between Norway and Denmark or Germany. That averages at more than one attack per night over the six months. j When Germany falls the garrisons m Norway will receive no more aid from outside but if they decide to fight on they will be more vulnerable to air attacks than ever. Operating from bases in Denmark and northern Germany the R.A.F. could paralyze the coastal shipping lanes, and knock out the comparatively few railways, so that it would be impossible to move either supplies or men. Lack of oil would render the remnantspf tle Luftwaffe in Norway as impo'tenfas they are now above the battlefields of Germany. In those circumstances it is unlikely that the Germans could hold out very long; except in small isolated groups.
