B0XL198 JAP WAR CASTS SHADOW OVER CELEBRATIONS The thoughtf ulness which characterized the observance of V-E Day in most Pacific- Coast 'cities held sway to a large extent in Prince Rupert and, ex-'ccpt for a few minor outbursts by merrymakers Tuesday night, everything was calm. One citizen In esmversation with a reporter seemed to strike the keynote of icactlon here when he said: "In spite of the fact that we have been concen trated on the European war, Prince Rupert has always had a watchful eye on the 'War across the Pacific. The end of Hitler's war means the real start cf the Jap var and that will be pretty i close to heme for us." Downtown roistering last night was confined to a few local" Instances, none serious. Police Constable Harold Johnstone rescued a string of colored bunting which a party of servicemen had torn down from the court house and were dragging up the street. 4A driver who directed his car at a telephone pole with sad results to the vehicle was booked on a charge of driving while intoxicated. The incident took place on Hays Cove Ave. Police answered an ambulance call from a. sailor who was found downtown with a severe gash in his chin. After being taken to a doctor who stitched up the cut,-the sailor was. reluctant to make any report on the matter. Three natives, two. women, landed in Jail charged with intoxication. The long holiday, which caused most stores to be closed from Saturday night until last night, caused many people to run short cf food supplies and this morning food stores are doing a brisk trade as housewives replenish their stocks. Yesterday, many attempts were made to purchase milk and bread, and even cold meats at restaurants, but these places ex perienced an unexpected rush and were unable to' be of much assistance to householders.
