John Hart's wizardry In finance, In 19 years as British Columbia's finance minister won him national recognition and probably had a great deal to do with his election in 1941 to lead the province's first coalition government. His chief aim has always been to keep British Columbia's credit at the highest level and he made good the promise that the province would never default so long as. he was minister of finance. Mr. Hart left the political field in 1924 to devote his time to private .business, but was Induced to return to the finance ministry in 1933 and retained that portfolio after he took the premiership, succeeding his former Liberal chief, T. D. Pattullo, who resigned after refusing to form a coalition goverment. Since boyhood finance has Interested him and he once said: "If I had it to do over again, I'd follow the same course. Finance has been a hobby with me." He, was 19 wjhen Jie reached Victoria in 1998 fronV his native Ireland. There were 48 entries so the tournament was divided into two draws "A" and "B." All the couples in A section played against each other and the same In B section and some hard battles were fought to decide the ultimate winners of each section. In A draw, Bill Craft and Miss Helen Brandt came out with flying colors with a score of 9 games and in B draw, G. Smith and M. Be-radine tied with Lieut. S. L. Campbell and Miss Babe Allen so a play-off was arranged and G. Smith and M. Beradine, after a hotly contested match, were declared the winners of the section. The hardest fought match of the tournament was the fine between the two section winners. After a close and exciting game, in which there were many good rallies. Bill Craft and Miss Brandt managed to beat G. Smith and M. Beradine by the close score of 15-13. John Montgomery of the "Y" presented the prizes to the winners and run-ners-up. It was leit that the tournament did much to Improve the calibre of play and also provided a means of introducing the badminton enthusiasts, of which there are many, to ca'h other. In Big Four play, Toronto Argonauts and Ottawa Rough Riders maintained their leadership, each winning :ts respective week-end game. The Argos nosed out the Hamilton Tigers 10-8 while the Rough Riders .walked over the Montreal Hornets 25-3 in a night game. In the Ontario Rugby Football Union circuit, Toronto Balmy Beaches defeated the Windsor Rockets ,23-5 and the Ottawa Trojans scored a 15-11 win over the Hamilton Wildcats. In Saturday's exhibition gridiron performances, Toronto Indians blasted the University of Western Ontario by a score of 13-9. while the University of Toronto downed McMaster, 18-9.
