British Railway Strike . . . The new labor government of Britain runs into the threat of a general strike of railway workers as one of its first purely domestic problems. A crisis arising from such a strike might have some complications, particularly in view of the fact that nationalization of the railways is one of the major pledged plans of the new government. The appeal of the president of the National Union of Railwaymen to "play the game" and stay on the job during negotiations with the companies would indicate that a strike at this time'would be neither unanimous or authorized. . Possibly the workers who staged the walk-out at the week-end were pverly impatient. With Union heads urging the railway workers to con Leisure Clothes TRY OUR CLASSIFIED ADS THEY GET RESULTS trol themselves and the labor government having at least some say and influence in connection with the negotiations either directly or indirectly, there should be little danger of a general strike being precipitated and a partial or abortive strike would not help the cause of the workers as their union president suggests. British Columbia Strikes . . . Meantime, British Columbia appears to be having its Strike troubles. Meat packers at Vancouver have gone out in sympathy with those of the Canada Packers ' in Toronto, whose strike has also been joined by the company's workers at Peterborough, Winnipeg and Edmonton. A meat packers' strike' might easily paralyze the "distribution of meat in short order. Serious also at this particular time when vegetables, fruit, fish, etc., are in season would be a tie-up of canning plants which might be an early sequel to the strike of American Can Co. employees. Certainly, the strike would have no sympathy with the public which often neither knows nor cares much about the actual matters in dispute. "THE MEN'S SHOP" Prescriptions.. . It Is financed through the New' York Headquarters of the Salvation Army and staffed entirely with Canadian personnel. Under Mrs. J. R. Elfert, wife of Captain Elfert, harbor master, the women of the Canadian Navy League act as hostesses. Mr. Tutte, known as plain, ordinary "Pop" to thousands of sailors, meets Uie majority of vessels docking at Prince Rupert immediately upon their arrival and welcomes the crew -members to his club. All seamen of Allied Nations are welcomed. Special bulletins of the club activities each week are distributed among the seamen by various dock agencies. . STIMULATED WITH NEW ENTHUSIASM, L0CAL RESERVE IS RESUMING SOON Stimulated with new vigor and enthusiasm following the recent annual camp at '.Nanalmo which was a memorable experience for all participating, men of the First Reserve Battalion, Prince Rupert Regiment (Machine Gun), will inaugurate the 1945-46 local headquarters training season on August 15, it is announced by Major C. J. Toombs, commanding officer of the unit. Following battalion roll call and Inspection on opening parade night, there will be a competition at arms for prizes which were originally Intended for a sports day at camp but which did not materialize. Competitions will be for honors such as best team In machine gun drill, smartest soldier on parade, etc. A battalion smoker will follow with men returning from overseas service as special guests. More advanced training will be carried out at local headquarters during the coming year, Major Toombs Indicated. Weekly parades will consist chiefly of schemes, some rather ambitious ones being already planned. The fact that there are now qualified transport and carrier drivers within the unit Itself enables such schemes being carried out. Welcoming Men From Overseas Men returning from overseas arc already manifesting Interest in the reserve and its activities, seeing therein the possibility of keeping up on a limited scale benefits and associations which they found in military life and for which the average ex-service man usually retains a hankering. Already, the local unit has adopted a policy of opening its facilities to the ex-service men, Major Toombs announces.
