"This is comDared to a maxl mum of 20 last winter," said Miss Juliette Robert, the hostel's nurse-matron nrMintr fhnt. she thought the decrease was largely due to the fact that most Of the pirls now rptmlarlv include fruit, cereal and mllk'ln their breakfasts. Before the girls came into residence many tried light housekeeping in boarding house rooms, frequently skipping oreaiuact to save time and money. Their hostel fees now cover rent and three square meals a dav. Patients this winter have been treated for colds, 'flu and a variety of accidents, encountered mostly while skiing. Only serious cases .have been one of septic throat and several of appendicitis. Recuperation at the hostel followed the operations. "The girls have also been learning more about how to look after their health," said . Miss Olive Crulkshank, manager, formerly director of Macdonald Hall, Guelph. At Christmas 35 passed ex aminations on a first aid course given by Miss Robert and another 25 are taking the St John Am bulance home nursing course. The hostel, which was opened for Grade One clerks and sten ographers June 19, 1943, is filled, and has a waiting list of 29. Girls may remain until they are promoted to a Grade Three po- slUon. A recent survey showed that 136 of the girls in resi dence were of 'teen age, and 120 between the ages of 20 and 25 Twelve of the rooms are slneles. four accommodate three girls each and the rest doubles. with the weekly rate set at $950 for a singe room. $8 for a share in a double and $7 In a triple. Entertainment is no problem for the girls may have their best beaux visit them in the timbered, two-storey main reception hall up to midnight, when the building is closed. In ad dition, there are six common rooms furnished In habitant style three on each floor- where feminine guests may be entertained, but most women friends are Invited to sit in at informal get-togethers in the girls' rooms. Hostel dances In the modern-ly decorated cafeteria provide more formal entertainment, under the supervision of elected dance committees. Effie Heggie of Klrkland Lake, Ont., and Marjorie Sheehan of Renfrew, Ont., were In charge of the last two, both held before Christmas. "With night school, skiing and so on during the winter there isn't so much time for dances, but we are planning them again In the spring," Miss Crulkshank said. Announcement Orange Ladies' Sale.
