December 24, 1945 CHILDREN ENJOY LEGION PARTY More than 130 youngsters were treated to a lively and enjoyable afternoon on Saturday at the Canadian Legion Christmas tree party In the Legion rooms. Santa Claus, whom adult unbelievers reported to be Reg. Kings in disguise, dispensed bags of candy, apples, oranges and a good deal of laughter. Convener of the party was Mrs. C. E. Morrow. A highlight of the program was a play uniting patriotic and 'Christmas themes as the Christ J mas Star, played by Elvlna Oden, conducted Donna, played by ' Margaret Wide and Ralph, Bobby Harvey, across Canada to see how the different provinces were celebrating Christmas. Tor onto and Montreal crossed the line, each to pick up a victory in their tussle in New York and Boston, respectively. In the New York encounter, Toronto's big Babe Pratt put in the winning goal late in the third period to give the Leafs a 4-3 win over their New York opponents. With the victory, the Leafs pulled to within striking distance of the fourth place Detroit Red Wings. Only two points now separate the Leafs from the Wings. From the Rangers angle, the Sunday result put the New York club deep in the N.H.L. cellar, seven points behind the Leafs. Sweeney Schriner tallied for the Leafs half way through the opening stanza on a pass from Billy Taylor. Ab de Marco tied the count less than two minutes later, but Taylor put Toronto ahead once again Inside threa minutes. Again New York tied the count, this time Ott 'Heller doing the honors for the Rangers. Gaye Stewart made it 3-2 for the Leafs in the middle frame. But the score was tied In the third period on a marker by Edgar Laprade. Both teams were playing rather sloppy hockey and It looked like the game would end In a tie. But Babe Pratt's goal before the curtain gave the game to the visitors.
