Staff nurses now start at $30 per month (all found) and receive an increase of $5 per month at the end of the first year of service and $10 at the end of the second year. These Increases will hereafter be $10 per year. Supervisors and technicians will receive similar Increases. Nurses who relieve casually by the day will henceforth receive $5 Instead of $4 per day, it was also decided. The difficulty cf obtaining nurses here, the board felt, was not peculiar to Prince Rupert tout was experienced generally. The board discussed the possi bility of making conditions more attractive for nurses. It was thought that a tennis court might be one effectlye means of making the surroundings more pleasant and the .grounds committee was asked to look into this possibility. A letter from the Prince Ru pert Labor Council, R. H. Ad- cock, secretary, expressed concern at the turnover of nurses here, suggesting that, If sufficient remuneration was the only difficulty, that might simply be rectified in view of the financial condition of the hospital. The Labor Council will be thanked by the board for the Interest it has shown and -will be advised that nurses' salaries here are equal to, If not better than, those being paid elsewhere In the province. BUY COAL NOW LETTERBOX CONDITION OF ROAD Editor, Dally News: In the edition of the Daily News of June 19 it is reported that the Prince Rupert Chamber of Commerce had received an enquiry as to the possibility of driving to this city from Eugene, Oregon. It is to be hoped that the Chamber In replying to this enquiry gives a more accurate des cription of the condition of the Skeena Highway than that reported toy Douglas Frizzell in the same issue, who describes the highway all the way from Prince Rupert to Vancouver "as being in excellent condition" except for two bad spots. The writer, who drove In to the city from Kitwanga on Sunday last can in noway agree that the road is in "excellent condition." On the other hand the fact Is that the best part of the highway from Terrace to Rupert is one series Of almost continuous pot holes. Some of them are so deep that thoughtful people have stuck pieces of trees in them as a warning, "excellent condition" Indeed! Instead of this kind of talk, it would be much 'better for the city If all service organizations and private citizens drew attention to the real condition of the road with a view to having it, remedied. In. any case to say that the road is In "excellent condition" now Is misleading and serves no useful purpose to this community. TRUTHFUL BOOSTER.
