AUIUMN BEAUTIES To travel through Northern British Columbia in the fall of the year Is a delightful experi ence which will paint pictures to be stored in memories album never to be erased. As the road dips and climbs, turns and twists so the view constantly changes and although one may pass through this district extending several hundreds of miles east from the coast many times, each succeeding trip becomes the more Interesting and more enthralling. When autumn spills her paints with mountains, valleys and streams her pallette and the sky-line like a studio back drop-deep blue and white, the eye becomes enchant ed. Should a turn In the road or the climbing of a height of land unfold to the eye the still waters of one of the Innumerable lakes, then, In deed, Is a true landscape in technlc6lor. Be warned, however, you who would say: "Yes let's take a trip!" You cannot view Nature's artistic handiwork of a hasty thlrty-mlle-an-hour trip but must be prepared, like the true art lover, to dwell before each picture drinking In Its grandeur, or syl van loveliness. Nature's art show is never end ing but the sere and yellow time of year Is when she hangs her choicest works, her galleries the skies. In the mountains and the woods all may walk In ecstacy rich man and poor for the artist takes no toll, nor are her works for sale. None may barter them for silver but all share in the abundance, perchance saddened somewhat-knowing these gems of color will fade and pass but again consoled in the assurance that next autumn and every autumn forever Nature's art galleries will open to ail. Nature, like a true" showman, makes use of every trick every artlflce-sound effects, the roar and splash of water, the sigh and rustle of trees, the grouse's drum, the owl's hoot, the smell of odorous pine, cedar and spruce, camp-fire smoke, the damp cool breeze of canyon stream, the still warmth of the open glade, the welcome cool of the silent woods. The winds play an aeolian orchestration, the dry timbers their harp, cathed ral-llke base notes, the sighing of a passing spirit or the ulu latlng roar of crowds. The stream chuckles like an elfin jes ter. Who Is poor when all these we have, save he who cannot appreciate, or they who do not know the highways and byways of British Columbia? H.P.
