Section 1, 3rd Avenue, Prince Rupert, B. C on Thursday, the 13th day of December, 1943. between the hours of 8 A.M. and 8 P.M. II. D. THAIN, Returning Officer. for five years now. Tie would like to see more people in Prince Rupert going In for them but warns that, to make a success of It, one must be prepared to study, spend time and give exacting attention. 'To me it U a lot of fun," he said yesterday afternoon as he stood among his 86 pots of 40 fine towering varieties the biggest 10 inches across, the smallest eight inches and upwards of three feet In height. Mr. Gamula proudly showed one of his snowy white Duke of Kents and then turned to the Duchess of Kent, a delicate pink two of the 40 carefully tabulated varieties. Admitting that he knew every one of them by name and was familiar with the habits, llkea and needs of each just as if they were living pets, the local business man went on to tell of the gentle scientific care which he bestows year round to the plants to bring them to their present glorious fruition. Mr. Gamula told how he starts his slips at the end'of December;, carefully selected from the stalk of the old plant Just under the ground, soaking them in solution for a time before plac irrg them in sand boxes for five weeks of rooting until February 15 when they receive their first potting. Then follows a regular succession of repottlngs with a first nipping off of the tender stalk about March 15 to three branches and another cutting May 15, all this being to control and perfect the ultimate blooming. Mr. Gamula also described the careful preparation of the soil which appears to be so vital to the exacting ultimate success the mixtures of compost, leaf mould, bone meal, wood ashes, iron filings, oyster shell and coal soot. Of course, all this would be to the ordinary garden hortlciil-turalist a task to tasking of time and patience but to Mr. Gamula "it is Just year round fun." Outside of the greenhouse the young plants go April I and there they stay until September 30 (the greenhouse is meantime used to raise tomatoes 300 pounds this year). Incidentally, they seem to thrive best around 40 degrees temperature. Prince Rupert is an ideal habitat. Every evening m summer, rain or shine, each pot receives Its exactly two pitchers of water and the leaves get their mild spray. In the hothouse there is in addition a fortnightly fumigation to keep down the green flies. There Is also the matter of soil feeding towards the final stage of maturity In the fall when prepared manure, diluted soot - We serve you nothing but the best Special Red Brand Beef, - Choicest fresh Vegetables and Fruits Complete line of Groceries OUR DELICATESSEN DEPARTMENT OPEN DURING REGULAR STORE HOURS Choicest Cooked Meats, Meat Pies, Roast Chickens, Fish and Chips daily. However the mass of glorious color white, pink, yellow, branze, mauve, red, orange, gold and brown which can be seen in Mr. Gamula's greenhouse these days makes understandable the Justifiable pride and the Joy Mr. Gramula feels in the annual culmination of his hobby.
