LOOKING OVER BALL LEAGUES There were no baseball games played at all In the Major Leagues yesterday and the opening ame of the final series for the international League's Gov-ernos' Cup was postponed because of rain. The pennant race is still on in both Major Leagues but it is beginning to look more and more like Detroit In the American and Chicago in the' National. All that the Tigers have .to do to clinch first place is to take two out of their remaining four games. Even if they win only, one, they end up in, a tie with the Washington Senators. f In the National League, St. Louis hasn't given up yet. The Redblrds open a two .game series with the Cubs in Chicago today and all the blue chips are on the table for those two games. If they win both those games the card. will be right in there for. the pennant but if they lose them the jig is pretty well up. The pennant hopes of the Washington Senators received a jolt yesterday when their ' protest against the game they lost on unaay to fnnaaeipnia was thrown out toy An-.r r.can League President Will Herrldge. Owner Clark Griffith had protested a rule in the eighth mninz of th game, when Buddy Lewis fielded Mayo Smith's fly to right field for what anparently was the first out. The Senators say that after the catch, Lewis switched the ball to his right hand and started to make an under handed toss to second baseman George Myatt who had run out onto the grass. Lewis inadvertently hit his glove with hlslright hand and dropped the ball. The ' umpire ruled It "no catch." Big Leagues KEEN FLAG RACE IS ON Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers Still Hard Tressed NEW YORK, Sept. 25 The Detroit Tigers are a little closer to the American League pennant today in spite of the fact that they were shut out 5-0 on two hits by the St. Louis Browns Sunday. For, while the league-leading Tigers were losing to St. Louis, second place Washington Senators were splitting a double-header' with Philadelphia. Philadelphia took the first game of the twin bill 4-3 and the Senators came back to take the second by the same score. The two games finished Washington's regular schedule and all that Detroit has to do now is to break even on tneir remaining fouri games. In other American League games, Cleveland beat Chicago 8-2, and Boston and New York split a twin bili. Boston took the first game 6-5 and the Yankees copped the second 2-1. Over in the National League on Sunday, the Chicago Cubs clung to their game and a half lead over St, Louis by beating Pitts burgh 7-3 in the first game of a double-header. The second game was postponed because of rain. St. Louis kept their pennant hopes alive by taking a 9-6 win from Cincinnati and Boston beat New York twice, by 4-1 and 7-3 Philadelphia and Brooklyn each won one game In their double-header. Brooklyn won the first 9-0 and Philadelphia the second, 4-3. , Rain forced cancellation of all National and American League games Monday. that Inning to tie up the game and won it In the twelfth. Here are todays baseball games: National League St. Louis at Chicago, Brooklyn at New York, Pittsburgh at Cincinnati. American League Cleveland at Detroit, Chicago at St. Louis. "There were seven or eight men aboard and at all times it looked as it they would have to jump overboard. Yet they stayed aboard and fought the fire as long as there was any hope." Crew members of the General Kennedy came close to suffering burns when they approached the burning ship to cut the steel tow line after the ship had been set ashore. Sergeant Major H. L. Knox personally released the towllne, assisted toy Cpl. J. Beacham. They went Into sizzling water in a 12-foot dinghy. The ywere actually sprayed with steam from the burning vessel. Sgt. Major Knox received the British Empire Medal for an exploit earlier in the war when he was skipper of a ship which laid a cable In the open Pacific off the Queen Charlotte Islands. As they approached to within 20 feet of the ship, steam lines exploded, and they narrowly escaped being badly burned by the torrents of steam that blew in all directions.
