ACROPOLIS IS WINNER Takes First of Area Basketball Se mi-Finals from Navy Spearheaded by Bob Kiener, Acropolis Hill's fast basketball team defeated Navy 70 to 41 at the "Y" gym in the first of the Area League basketball semifinals last night. The play-off is a best-of-three games scries to determine the club to oppo.se Port Edward in the finals. Kicner paced the winners with 24 points while Deiss was next in line with 16. Navy kept on fairly even terms with the Acropolis quintet in the first quarter but, as the game went ahead, the victors' lead steadily mounted. Acropolis put up an airtight defence that made it very diffi cult for the sailors to get close- in shots. Despite this obstacle. however, Jimmy Thotbum bagged 19 points for Navy. The line-ups follow: Acropolis Kiener 24, Deiss 11, Kalinovltch 12, Wallingford 4, Garzellonl 9, Goldman, Brueg- ger 5, Homyak, Gilbert 70. Navy Sisler 7, Carter 8, Mil ler 2, Thorfourn 19, Barker 2, Preston 3, Baird, Mousscau, Har vey 41. Referee, Comadina. Acropolis advanced to this round by defeating Soo Suds last week in a single sudden death ! game by a wide margin and now bids fair to repeat the perform ance against Navy in this series. I However. Navy have had some changes both in their line-up and coach and hopes yet to pull a surprise on the Acropolis Hill boys. Coach Frank Watson has been training his men diligently since taking over his new duties. Local betting circles are treading very carefully on any big wagers on this series. The final game on Wednes day between Acropolis Hill and Port Edward will wind up the Prince Rupert Area Basketball for another season. The winning team will be presented with the trophy emblematic of the Prince Rupert area basketball championship. A very close game is expected since both teams on the season's record have been so closely matehed. A preliminary to last night's playoff game was played between Soo Suds and City, a return exhibition eame between the two teams.
