The secretary was instructed to write the school board secretary In connection therewith. There was a communication from the Aid to Norway organization complaining about the treatment being accorded Norwegians as compared with other liberated countries of Europe, and soliciting the assistance of the council In having same remedied. It was stated that forwarding of parcels to relatives and friends in Norway was re stricted to shipment to Den mark only and to the value of $8.50 only. This was further aggravated by the excessive prices prevailing in Denmark. Other liberated countries were not subject tq such restrictions and Norwegians both at home ' and abroad felt very much concerned. The complaint of the Norwegian organization was VITAMIN IN NEW FOODS Scientists Attempt to Find Best, Cheapest Sources TORONTO, Oct. 12 W-Look-ing toward the day when fruits and vegetables will be developed not for their flavor, size or color but for scientifically determined vitamin C content, a broad program Is being carried on In Ontario to find the best artd cheapest sources of the scarce vitamin, valuable in combatting and preventing certain diseases. The project, Initiated four years ago at the Ontario College of Agriculture, Ouelph, now engages the co-operation of the Hospital for Sick Children In Toronto, the Nutrition Foundation In New York and the Ontario Department of Agriculture. Hundreds of varieties of edible plants and of wild plants not ordinarily eaten but likely to be rich in vitamin C, Including milkweed, rose hips, walnuts, chicory, common mustard and a number of varieties of herbs have been tested during the research work. After four years of painstaking work. Dr. J. H. L. Truscott of the Agriculture Department and associates at the hospital and Horticultural Station at Vlneland have compiled a voluminous report which contains a mass of information of tremendous value, not only to medical and nutritional science but also to fruit and vegetable growers. Sun His Factor In Vitamin Food It was found, for Instance that red cabbage has double the vitamin C content of green cabbage and that five days of continuous shade causes a marked reduction in vitamin C content of certain vegetables. Experiments with tomatoes proved that those harvested under glass in January contained about only half the vitamin C found In the same T variety harvested In July or August either under glass or outside. There was evidence that tomatoes grown In the Barrie dlstrlc: tended to be high In vitamin C and that those grown at Vine-land had more vitamin C than those grown at Ouelph. But it has not been definitely determined that the environment factor Is directly associated with vitamin production. These discoveries led to a second phase of the project In which an attempt was made to breed tomatoes with as high a vitamin C content as grapefruit, which now has double that of .tomatoes. Breeding was started In 1944 and this year the first and second generation progeny took promising in the fields of the O.A.C. plant breeding for the same purpose has also been started with carrots, squash and radishes.
