Important business will be dis-cussed'at the forthcoming Dominion-Provincial conference in Ottawa. The. impending end of the war with its now certain victorious outcome makes the discussion, and possible settlement, of these problems with-out further delay most desirable. Premier John Hart will be leading the British Columbia government delegation and will take with him his ministerial colleagues whose departments are most directly interested in the problems of the postwar since everything that is dealt with at Ottawa will bear directly on the postwar situation. First of all will come probably the income tax matter which is now working on a temporary arrangement whereby the Dominion only imposes direct income tax. With the war nearly over, the time seems to have come for a settlement of this. Freight rates may also loom as an important question as far as British Columbia is concerned There are but two of the items of important business which will come up at the conference which, it is to be hoped, will lead to a better understanding all around as between Ottawa and the provincial Scott -Mc Hale CANADA'S FINEST SHOES FOR MEN Our shoemakers, the famed Scott -McIIale Craftsmen, are building shoes for our fighting men. We are proud to be able to lend our co- operation, accepting fewer shoes for civilian use, that Canada may have the world's best outfitted army. Wlien peace comes, you may depend on it that they'll have new ideas in shoes for men . . . both in smart style and comfort. in - You can plan for them, because they will be in pur store, in your size, as soon as regulations permit. "THE MEN'S SHOP" Money and Greatness . . . The impression prevails that in order to have influence and fame, a man must be in possession of wealth the more money he has, the greater, and more extended, his reputation as a great citizen, says the Guelph Mercury. But this theory is completely blasted by the probation of the will of the late Jack Miner. This famous Kingsville Canadian naturalist's total estate consisted of real estate valued at $10,500, being the Government valuation of his farm in connection with his birdsanctuary which is owned by the Jack Miner Foundation, and personal estate and effects valued at an additional $1,785, made up of personal belongings, cash in bank, and a small insurance policy. Jack Miner was not blessed with great worldly wealth, but he possessed something far more valuable the admiration and affection of his fellowmen. He was an outstanding example of a comparatively poor man, of modest education, who rose to the ranks of the internationally famous because he had a great heart full of love for all God's creatures. He befriended birds and animals, and through his writings, and addresses, known in all parts of this continent, he instilled into the minds of men and women a love for the beauties of nature and the responsibilities which human beings bear towards the lower forms of animal and bird life. At the time of his death he Was rated Canada's, best known private citizen and one of the five best known in the world. Eddie Guest, the Detroit poet, referred to him as "the best loved Christian in America" Money is not necessary to true greatness. The life of Jack Miner proves it conclusively. LETTERBOX DISSATISFACTION Editor, Dally News: I have noticed a general dissatisfaction with the way things are run lor young boys In this city. One instance can be shown when all Junior teams were to play at the Gyro Ball Park on June 28. When teams arrived there was no official game played because of the lark ledge of the schedule of games and teams. The boys were told to return next wppIc nn ruin k The teams showed up as before. inere was sua no schedule and no official games were played. On discussing this nrnhipm with some members of the four junior wuuia it was recommended that; 1. Responsible parties such as coaches or instructors be present at all game. 2. Schedules be published In local papers. 3. Age limit be cut down to 1C years and under. 4. Games played cannot be called official unless iiIjivpH . cording to schedule or decisions of all coaches. 5. Time for first game to begin at 7:00 p.m. Another cause of dissatisfaction I have noted is that many of the larger local organizations may show interest in the young generation but the representatives they send out to see they may help the boys are mostly "hot-air artists" ns it specific Instance is one where the West End Bovs rwestpm Bush Rangers) asked aid. They were promised help la early February. Meantime the East End Bovs at Seal nnvp Hrhnni were being helped. A very ef- licient trainer was sent for three weeks. During that, timp one would be surprised at the promises mey made: A shower? nh wp'H lmvn tviot in by next week. Wire to cover the winnows? Already ordered. Real mats for tumbling! Whv we took three from Seal Cove and broueht them herp the haven't arrived yet after six months). There was a Blaster Inh vihM was to be undertaken. The boys had faith and bought paint and kalsomine to finish the lob them selves. The patch has not been repaired and now there are several more holes which were caused by vandals from other parts of the city. As for equipment which was promised to the West End here is but a few: 2 basketballs, 3 or 4 softballs and bats, swing to the ceiling, volley balls, training sh.-ts. sweaters, promise to fix school building or approaching the city to repair the roof, etc. Some good vvas done bv Indi viduals. For Instances, c. B Thompson of the Kinsmen Club, and D. Wing kindly lent their trucks to haul sanrl frnm thp highway to their ball field. The money spent by the boys for their Softball enulnmpnt nnlnf kalsomine, etc., had been donat ed by neighbors or friends in addition to small amounts from buying and selline nnca mln Icp cream and hot dogs at their parties to raise funds, besides StopItch ANNOUNCEMENT of Insect I wish to announce that I have sold my furniture business on Third Avenue to Miss Kocelia Taft and John Odowes. The aim of the Tuberculosis uontroi Branch is to reduce the disease from a major public health menace to the negligible position which smallpox now holds," he said. "To do this we are making the latest and most perfect equipment available. However, we cannot succeed unless the people themselves cooperate." In Its struggle to halt the Insidious disease, the Department of Health has made available two completely eauiDned mobile X-ray units, and a third is on order, Mr. Huggins said. "There are purchased through the sale of Christmas seals, and in the last 18 months they have X-rayed 180.000 people in this province. We hope some day to be In a position where wp ran carry this preventive service to everyone at regular intervals." Industrial plants, Mr. Huggins said, are the most co-oDeratlve sections of the population because they have internal structures which expedite large scale X-raying.
