FIRST SPRING FLOWERS AtfE BORNE BY EARLY BULBS Spring months are almost pure I April and May has little to of- joy for garden lovers, free from the grief and disappointments which come later, with the weeds, the insects, perhaps a drought, or other difficulties. In the spring their efforts show a higher average of success; and they bring to the enjoyment of their achievements an eager appreciation from eyes wearied by the winter drabness. Yet the average garden in Lumber See U f or your BUILDING NEEDS PHILPOTT, EVITT SCO. LTD. The flowers which will give you thrills in April are not nu merous and you do not need so many of them. They are called minor bulbs, probably because they are small and produce plants with relatively tiny blos soms. In June they would prob ably not be noticed; but in April they have no competition and are precious beyond price. Small they may be, but they have a most amazing hardiness. Snowdrops, so perfectly named, because they olten blossom In the snow, pass a winter of subzero temperature buried 2 inches deep, often encased In ice; and then at the first real thdw of the spring, they burst into leaf and bloom. Frosts and freezing db not hurt them even then. Sclllas, which bloom after the snowdrops, are quite 'as hardy, and more vigorous. Their flowers of vivid blue are held up above their leaves and carpet the ground with color in a way THE POPPY I am the mystic symbol of Life In Death, The Pledge of Remembrance, Whose chalice of pain, brimful of a nation's tears, Blossoms anew in the streets and byways in November, . Offered with reverent hands to you in your hundreds of thousands. , I am the scarlet flower, immortalized In the last war, Springing to life, newborn, in the carnage of battle; Hiding with royal mantle the shell-torn wounds of the earth; Whispering .hope to the living, peace to the Valiant Dead. I am the blossom, new-fashioned by eloquent fingers, Once steady and strong in the grim, fierce struggle of past years, And proud In their youth to answer the call of the Nation, To offer their all in that Swift upsurging of valor. I speak to your hearts, newly wrung by the travail of warfare; Now that the strife Is done and the warriors return to their loved ones, Bringing their wounded home, with bitter memories behind them Of those who will walk no more in dear and familiar pathways. I am the Spirit of Peace, the Torch of Remembrance; Take me with loving hands and wear me with pride on your bosom; I am the Symbol of Sacrifice the blood -red Flower of Flanders; I am the Poppy. Crocuses, which bloom after the sclllas, have larger bulbs and larger flowers; they are not so easy to keep, but with their bril liant yellow and lavender flow ers they bring the first vivid color contrast into the garden picture. They will last for years without lifting the bulbs If you plant them In a well drained place and see that their leaves are not disturbed until they turn yellow, which is a sign that the bulbs are cured. Often rabbits eat their leaves; or if planted in the grass the lawn mower cuts them off and so destroys the bulbs. The place for them Is in a cultivated bed or border. These three flowers are the principal subjects on which we depend for April blossoms. It is remarkable how much pleasure a few bulbs of each will bring in the early spring. No attempt to plant the entire garden for thLs period; groups of from a dozen to a hundred bulbs are sufficient in the small garden. The location of this early show Is important. Prior to becoming inspector for the Prince Rupert district and the Yukan 15 years ago, Mr. Bryden spent several years as Inspector along the Mackenzie and Pence Rivers. "Occasionally a Peace River farmer would become impressed with the amount of money that could be made from river transportation and he would call in his neighbors .and whip together a boat. That was .about as far as they ever got. When the ln-fpector came along the boat never got into use," he said. His Job Involved a variety of responsibilities from inspecting the tall shafC of a steamship to determining the buoyancy of a lifebelt, he declared. The Journey which pitchblende ore, source of radium, must take from the mine on Great Bear Lake to the radium plant at Port Hope, Ont., was One which involved transhipments Ircm one flat-bottomed river boat to another and a ma jor portage before it reached the railhead at Wnterways, Alta., Mr. ' Bryden recalled. The reason that they don't ! move the factory to the mine is that it takes a tremendous amount of chemicals to produce a mall amount of radium.
