April 2 Oj The combined American and British fleets continued pounding Japan's Ryukyu Islands Saturday and Fleet Admiral Nimitz announced that further heavy damage had been inflicted on the enemy. Forty-six enemy ships were sunk or damaged and 87 aircraft 'were destroyed as carrier aircraft and warship guns carried the attack Into its ninth day. Concentrations of bomb and shells were hurled on Okinawa, principal Island of the Ryukyu group, 325 miles south of Japan's mainland. An unconfirmed Jap anese despatch said that the attacking fleet included about 15 battleships. Faced with a need for better mooring laclllties for their fishing boats and with a shortage of labor they pitched in and did the job themselves.
