SPORT NEWS An Epsom veterinary surgeon pocketed a small fortune on an outlay of $94 In one of the racing world's most remarkable bloodstock deals. It came at the December bloodstock sales at Newmarket, England, wheh the Hon. Dorothy Paget, wealthy breeder and owner, paid $51,800 for Sister Clara, a mare that the veterinary, MaJ. E. C. Doyle, D. S.O., bought "dirt cheap" In Ire land in 1939. Sister Clara was then a yearling, so big and back ward none about the sale ring gave her a second look. But Doyle liked her breeding, "took a chance," and snapped her up for $94, "I didn't know what to do with her," Doyle said. "She could not be trained. Then I had her mated with Stardust. The foal fetched $31,000. Now I believe her to be In foal again." Sister Clara is by Scarlet Tiger out of Clarence, dam of the famed National Stud Product, Sun Chariot, who won the 1,000 Guineas, the Oaks and the? St. Leger, three of the season's five classics, while running in the King's colors two years ago. It was Sun Chariot's success that called attention to Sister Clara's breeding. Lord Milford, one of racing's luckiest owners and standing I nearly seven . feet high, outbid many other turfmen to purchase the brood mare Exhibitionist, for $49,500. Exhibitionist won the 1,000 Guineas and the Oaks in 1937. She Is by the St. Leger winner, Solario, and already has produced winners. Purchase of Flamingo as a yearling was Lord Mllford's first turf venture several .years ago. Flamingo was second in the Derby and won the 2,000 Guineas and nearly $100,000 In stake money. The fashion of paying sensa tional prices at the sales spread 'ows io iwo cigm-monin oia iouis oi Derby winner Watling Street who brought $14,130 and $13,188, respectively. Since each foal weighed about 49 pounds, the pur chasers paid something like $313 a pound. While the foals were being sold, a wooden rocking-horse, of all things, was being knocked down for $122, more value, less than 200 yards away In a sales room. Bloodstock breeders in all parts of the world always anticipate eagerly the Newmarket sales. They provide opportunities to replace wastage and there have been occasions when brood mares have been purchased and the foals they were carrying became classic winners In the country of their adoption. From their establishment nearly 60 years .ago, the December Sales soon became a tradition. At first sales extended only over one or two days until finally, more than 40 years ago, five days of the first week In December were reserved for the sale of mares and 'foals, horses in and out of training, as well as stallions and potential stallions. Breeders and trainers from nearly every country came to the peacetime sales. Now they mostly PUCK STARS GOING OVER WINNIPEG, Jan. 0 05 Four members of the R.C.A.F.
