Yesterday, while the Bums were losing a heavy slugging match to the St. Louis Cardinals,, the Chicago Cubs were pounding out a double victory over the luckless Phillies. As a result the Brooklyn lead has been reduced to a single point. In the American League the leading Detroit Tigers lost a close 5 to 4 decision to the New York Yankees but they still have a three-game margin over the Washington Senators who are continuing their big winning streak and took a double victory yesterday from the St. Louis Browns. Yesterday's big league scores: American League Boston 2-2, Cleveland 8-4. Philadelphia 1, Chicago 0. Washington 6-5, St. Louis 3-2. New York 5, Detroit 4. National League St. Louis 15, Brooklyn 3. Box 274 LOOKING OVER BALL LEAGUES In the Natidnal League the St. Louis Cardinals swamped the Brooklyn Dodgers 15-3 while the Cincinnati Reds edged out the New York Giants 3-2. The Boston Braves captured "both ends of a doubleheader with the Pittsburgh Pirates by scores of 13-5 and 14-8. Meanwhile the Chicago Cubs won both games of their twin bill with the Phillies. Chicago took the first game 11-3, and the second 5-1. In the American League,' the New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-4 while Phlla-clphia Athletics blanked the Chicago White Sox 1-0. The Cleveland Indians won twice to beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 and 4-2. The Washington Senators took two games from the St. Louis Browns. Washington won the first game 6-3 and the second 5-2. In the International League the Montreal Royals eked out a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Bisons while the Rochester Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-2. The Newark Bears chalked up a 4-2 win over the Jersey City .Giants and the Baltimore Orioles edged out the Syracuse Chiefs 6-5. FORTRESS WINS OVER BATTERY Striking out 15 and hurling two-hit ball, Rube 'Sher pitched Fortress to a 4-0 victory over Coast Battery In a Senior Area Softball League game last night at Gyro Park. The losing pitcher, Kunltz, yielded two extra-ibase hits to Martel and McCorkell but, aside from that, pitched effective ball, limiting Fortress to five blows.
