LAWSON LITTLE TRIES COMEBACK 1910 National Open Champ After Three Years in Navy Eyes Winter Tour at 34 By FRANK ECK NEW YORK, Dec. 3 (AP) W. Lawson Little, who reached his peak as a golfer ten years ago buc added the National Open to hi3 list of conquests five years later, has his eyes set on golf's gold dust trail, and there are few professionals who doubt that he will make the grade. Little, now 34, and nearing playing weight at 190 pounds, has been away from competitive golf three years. He went Into the U.S. Navy as an apprentice seaman December 12, 1942, and was a lieutenant when discharged October 24. Little came into prominence by winning the British Amateur and National Amateur tournaments in .1934 and again in 1935, the only time these two events were won in succession by the same man. But It was In 1929 that the Monterey. Calif., golfer gave an Inkling cf becoming a top flight linksman. That year he played in the National Amateur at Del Monte and lost to Francis Ouimet, 1 up. In a third round match. Oul-met was quick to predict a great future for Little, then a mere youth of 18. In 1930, the year Bobby Jone" scored his famous grand slam-British Open and Amateur and U. S. Open and Amateur -Little reached the second round in the National Amateur. In 1932 he bowed in ihe opening round, but the following year, at the age of 22, he reached the semi-final. The next two years he scored j with ease In the National Ama teurs, first at Brcokline, Mass.. then at Cleveland. Took British In 1931 But it was in May, 1934, that he set the golfing world on fire by winning his first major tournament, taking the British Amateur. He beat Jim Wallace on the 23rd hole, 14 and 13. At the halfway mark he was 12 up, scoring an eagle and seven birdies along the way. He beat Dr. William Tweddcll, 1 up, to retain the crown in 1935. When the year was up Little was awarded the James E. Sullivan award.
