Whifflets From The Waterfront Cannery Glutted' With Herring Port Edward to Can Clams Soon Packers are bringing In herring to Nelson Bros, cannery at Port Edward in such quantity that the cannery is reported to be completely "plugged up." Tuesday several packers were standing by at Port Edward In process of unloading or waiting to be unloaded. Their cargo will keep the plant busy for some time to come. The packer Wawanesa unloaded herring at B.C. Packers here Tuesday. About 20 tons of clams arc on hand at B.C. Packers cannery at Port Edward and canning operations are expected to begin about January 27. Clam digging is dependent on tide levels. When low water drops below the four-foot level the clam beaches become available to the diggers. The next low tide cycle is due January 24 and from that date on quantities of clams will now to the cannery.
