Norton Youngs as a result of the removal yesterday of government control of metals mining. Questioned on a rumor that the local assay office was closing, Mr. Youngs exclaimed "Certainly not. I expect it will be far busier I than it pvpr has in tVio riacf " Mining development, he thinks, will spring back as quickly as the equipment and manpower situation make it possible. The rumor apparently began to float through the city following published advertisements of an auction sale in the assay office. Mr. Youngs said positively that it had nothing to do with the assay office. "It's being held In a warehouse nearby and has nothing to do with us," he said. The goods being auctioned were the property of the late Kitty Moen, murder victim. They are being sold by order of the provincial government administrator. Regarding mineral develop ment in the district, Mr. Youngs' optimism is based on the declared eagerness of numerous mining operators in the Interior and In the Portland Canal region to get on with exploration and production as soon as the situation permits. The controls which were removed yesterday by the office of Munitions Minister C. D. Howe, had been in effect since June, 1942. Their object was to divert manpower and equipment, particularly from gold mines to mere essential Industries in the crucial period of the war. In this district the renewed turge of activity will be felt in the areas around Houston, Haz-' elton, Usk and Stewart. Faith in the mineral wealth of those! areas is particularly high. , Announcement From Ottawa Yesterday Ottawa announced that all metal control restrictions on the mining of gold and other metals or minerals have been removed. This was announced by the office of Munitions Minister C. D. Howe. The wartime contrnl nrrfpr Hi. 'signed to conserve manpower and machinery Drdhiblted all ' expansion of existing: mines and I the development of new prop erties after June 22, 1942, except by permission of the metals control commission. Yesterday's action means that all restrictions on the sinking of mine shafts and the development of now nrnnprUps nnH . jpanslon of underground work Capitol have been lifted. Mining operators will be . able to lay plans to begin new developments. Relief! Lice and Not Tuberculosis Confusion of the terms "pediculosis" and "tuberculosis" may have caused some alarm as to the condition of the health of pupils at Conrad Street School. A reference in the Daily News yesterday in reporting Wednesday night's school board meeting said there were nine cases of "tuberculosis" at that school. The cases were instead "pediculosis" which, reduced to common and more understandable terms, simply means lice.
