GRUNTERS HERE FOR WRESTLING SHOW TONIGHT Everything points to a lull house tonight at the Civic Centre for the big wrestling sho between Jack McLauglin, pres ent holder of the Canadian mid Ulcwcight wrestling crown and claimant of that same title fo: the whole universe, and Gil Pearson, one of the roughest and toughest men in the business. McLaughlin arrived on the Camosun this afternoon and after a brisk canter to loosen himself up a little claimed he wasn't going out on a limb when he predicted a win for himself. Pearson met Mr. McLaughlin in Vancouver a few weeks ago but the bout ended in such an uproar that both men were disqualified and it is doubtful if promoters in the south wish to stage the return bout. When it was decided toy the Civic Centre Association that a professional wrestling show should be included in the program of sports for the winter it was at once planned to try to bring these two men together here. , In no sport under the sun docs the man with the rule book mean so much to the state of affairs existing at the moment than in the professional wrestling game. These poor and usually mammoth chaps are subjected to the most unfair treatment by the participants and simply because 'they don't just seem to know when the boys want to be left alone. Tonight a native son will be the third man in the ring and, semehow there is reason to believe he will be able and willing to get in there and straighten SHORT SPORT New Zealand is experiencing a sports boom which may break all previous records. The demobilization of thousands of thousands of men from the forces and the greater leisure e;iven by the practically universal 40-hour week have combined to give ail tranches of sport a "rcater impetus than they have fc'iwn for years. Racing continues to draw the largest crowds, llu.c gatherings thronged rac- n: and trotting meetings ; lirou'hout the Dominion over Uic Christmas and New Year holidays. At nine meetings on Boxing Day $2,051,200 were w;icrcd on the totalizators. This included $838,640 at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting, which is a New Zealand record in betting at a single day's racing. Total betting during the day was $300,000 higher than ihe previous year. Cricket l.s the most lxjpular slimmer game In New Zealand. There Is almost as much interest in England-Australia cricket tests as there is in the two countries chiefly concerned. Although their size is still greatly restricted, newspapers all carry at least two full columns each day on the tests, including long commentaries by former cricket stars. Yachting has had a notable revival with the recorn-missionlng of many boats that were laid ujl during the war. Dozens of excellent harbors and hundreds of sheltered inlets around the coast offer fine cruising grounds. Races are held for all classes from large oceangoing yachts to small sailing dinghies. Boxing, dirt-track motocyclc and midget car racing, and cycle racing arc all booming.' Lawn bowling is by far the most popular sport with older men in the Dominion. A large number of greens are in use both winter and summer In all cities and towns and the numbers playing are steadily Increasing. Golf In New Zealand is chiefly a winter sport as the links get too hard and fast in .summer. However. some enthusiasts play the year round. He has played every game on the Canadian calendar and played them for keeps. When Joshed a little today regarding the seriousness of his. duties tonight and also the danger of getting all mixed up with things In general he casually admitted that wrestling was the sport he loved while a boy and, If he has to step back tonight it'll be the champion that'll be the cause of it. Said George: "Ail they can do is tie me in a knot and leave me there" but there was intent in his voice and that intention no doubt was that it will take two to tic the knot. In summary it will definitely be a show on the must list for those that enjoy thrills, the thrills hatched from the beating of man by man. In the game of professional wrestling where few holds are barred, It is reasonable to understand that it flourished all over the continent and plays to packed houses in all the large centres but this is the first attempt the Civic Centre Association ha? made to sell it to fans here and the guess Is that it will be a tremendous success.
