ChooM k lot ours GER BROS. pnesf SiiVerpfoe -LLERS H !,- 1 SATURDAY SERMON DRINKING (liy HEV. BASIL S. POCKTER, St. Andrew's Cathedral) This essay has considerable reference to the drinking of alcoholic beverages and yet I intend an even wider application. Sometimes it is said that churchmen are concerned either to say nothing on this matter, or else, simply to say you mustn't. From other quarters comes the question as to why people cannot be taught the correct way in which to drink. i I do not believe the correct way can be taught, any more than people can be taught the correct way in which to make love or make -war. The matter goes far deeper. The way we' ' do It depends upon jsuch factors as our religious faith and out-1 look, our sense of dignity and self respect, the kinds of bodies and minds we have Inherited. It may also depend partly upon such factors as whether or not we are undernourished and whether or not we face a peculiarly difficult or dull situa tion in regard to ordinary living, , Drinking of any kind is a character - revealing tiling, In the seventh chapter of the Book of Judges the test of drinking, water was applied to ten thousand men down on the bank of the river and only three hun-! dred passed the test. There are plenty of people today who want to see how somebody behaves with food and drink before they risk their necks with them on the trail, through deep waters and in business. Every man or woman sitting down with strangers to eat or drink is subject to an automatic scrutiny. They are under examination. And doubly so if there is any al cohol. The millions spent on al cohol are not all for fun. In business this is a rough and ready way that men find out what sort or people they are dealing with. And while this sorttr thing may be often done from a strictly honorable and honest standpoint, nevertheless, it is wise to remember that cold- hearted Mammon sits often in brilliant .'and convivial company seeking new prey. considerable sympathy with those Christian people who ab stain from the use of alcohol sj a matter of principle. The world is the richer and life is the better for people who have principles and abide by them, come what may. And since life is difficult and dangerous enough without the addition of such extra hazards, we may applaud those who have decided both for their own sakes and for the sake of others to give this thing a wide berth. But something else may be expected from some who have the Gospel. Saint John the Baptist came neither eating nor drinking. The Son of God, Who delighted to speak of Hjmself as the Son of Man, came both eating and drinking. So we may conclude that both attitudes have ample justification. From time to time Ik is necessary to emphasize the fact that Christ's Salvation is separable from tnc prohibitions. And now, a few general remarks. For young people, al cohol, 1f It is to en.ter the picture at all, should be regarded as part only of a special occasion like a wedding or family celebration. Their youth provides them with all the intoxication they need. For grown men and women, it can be said that If friendship and fellowship exists in a group, drinking may enhance it but it will not create it ir it is not there already. It is far more likely in the long run to have the opposite effect. Friendship Is not for sale at four dollars a quart. And, by tne same token, we must not deceive ourselves Into thinking that here is some magic alchemy which can change misery into happiness. Misery must be faced. There is no way out in this direction. The Europeans, in a great, many of their folk songs, sing that love is for youth and wine is for age. And since they have been singing thus for centuries, there Is doubtless some truth here. But the Grace of God is far, far more than these things. To come to the conclusion oi Better Jewelry" i the matter, perhaps we should consider nme sort of a phll- CHURCH VISITOR mmmmmwJw mmmm LmmmW mW Rev. It was a cup put to His lips for Him to drink. In regard to life we read In the Psalms that in the hand of the Lord there Is a cup. When life aDDcars cood to us. we drink have admiration for and recdily. When the taste Is bitter, we sometimes draw back and complain. But the good drinker must remember that he must be Just as ready to accept the bitter as the sweet fc "take it" with just as good a grace out of the cup of the Lord. The bitter and tfte sweet are the stangely Intermingled tastes of the same wine of life. To deny misery and pain or to seek escape from heavy burdens is to deny life itself. You cannot have the one without the other. The cup of life, the cup of death we must learn to drink, it. ana like It. TOO IATE TO CLASSIFY iLOST Grey Persian cat, male. ) vicinity Alfred St. Reward. NOW IS TIME TO PLAN EFFICIENTLY FOR SUMMER VEGETABLE GARDEN Vegetable gardens need planning, not only for beauty, but even more for efficiency. It is amazing the amount of time and space that can be saved by sitting down in the winter, when time is plentiful, to figure out carefully just how many feet of each vegetable you grow will be required to give" your family abundant food this summer and provide enough to put in cans or into a freezer for next winter. If you wait until the ground thaws out, and it's time to spade or plow the soil, youare likely to be so busy that you will neveT really have time to think things out, and make sure that you grow enough of everything you need, yet avoid having a surplus of a few vegetables with a scarcity of many others. The vegetables which require special thought are the ones which give a short harvest. They arc also the earliest ones, which may begin to yield In May or June, but which for the very reason that they are early, are at their best table quality only a few short weeks. Unless you plan your sowings carefully, you are likely to have altogether too many during this first brief harvest, and then pass the rest of the summer with none at all, or at least too little of them. What are these short harvest vegetables? Well, snap beans, beets, carrots, lettuce and endive kohlrabi, turnips, spinach, onions from sets, and radishes are the principal ones. Many can be enjoyed throughout the summer if you make enough sowings of them-and plan Uicm so that one short harvest follows another, and as soon as quality begins to deteriorate in the first sowing. The time it takes to mature a crop depends somewhat on the SEE US FOR ALL REQUIREMENTS IN Office Supplies Consult us for your needs In all types of printing work. Everything In high-class stationery.
